Title: Trying to identify my Motor
Post by: BigHemi353 on March 28, 2009, 02:49:19 pm
I've looked all over and cant seem to find my block casting number anywhere? It is GM395509. Seems like it switches to 7 numbers after that. I'm planning on buying an overhaul kit for it this week but I need to know what block I have first. Seems like PO's have put other heads on the truck as well. Thanks, Andy

not sure if it helps any but here is a pic of it. Looks like another small block to me(i restore small Briggs and Stratton and antique Farmall Tractor motors mainly). This is my first small block to rebuild. Ive read some places that the 395509 could be a 400. I was told it was a 350 from PO. Thanks guys, Andy

I think you'd need to pull a head off anyways to make sure that the block hasn't already been overbored, before you could order a rebuild kit.  Once you do that you'll know what you got.

I've printed out casting numbers for blocks, rears, intakes, you name it and can't find it anywhere. I even found a website where you type in the number and it spits everything out for you. These numbers are from the drivers side behind the head right? Do you know if it's a crate motor? It looks like a newer alt. Double check the numbers and i'll help if I can.

I call a dealer when I want to know what a motor is. They always want the number on the right hand front of the block just in front of the head, on the deck surface.

Most of what I have is from nastyz28 and mortec. It ain't there.

Hey Big, do you have the suffix and or prefix codes off the engine boss in front of the pass side head where Blazin described?

I took of the alternator, saw nothing there. might be hidden by grease. i'll take some carb cleaner to it when its daylight out. got to take a day off working on the truck....dad birthday  ;)

If the block has ever been decked it will be gone.

If it says GMXXX it is a crate motor.

Capt, since you mentioned it, would a crate motor still have a casting number behind the drivers side head?
