Title: Removing a lift kit
Post by: doodlebug on March 28, 2009, 11:30:29 pm
Hi folks.  I'm looking at buying a '84 Chevy 4X4 1/2 ton long bed pickup.  I've only seen pictures of it so far, but I noticed that it looks like it has about a 4 or 5" lift on it.  Owner says it has 33" tires on it.  Personally I don't care for lifts all that much, maybe just a small lift of around 2", but that's about it.  Question is, how hard is it to remove a lift kit and to return the truck to stock height or is it even feasible to do so?  I like everything about the truck except for this one issue.  I was wondering if I just purchased a new 2" lift kit if I could just substitute that for everything that is under it now to bring it back down to earth a little?  Your help and advice is much appreciated.

easier to go down than to go up, ref: brake lines, etc..
If it is done by blocks, just put different blocks and ubolts in.  If it done by other suspension parts, well, get back to stock parts from a salvage yard or other donor.

So, it may not be as difficult as I had thought.  Remove rear blocks if that is what it has and replace with lower (original) ones.  Replace front springs with lower ones or original from donor truck.  Replace brake lines, shocks, etc. if needed.  Is that about right?  Did the original height trucks have blocks at all in the rear or did the springs set right down on the perches?  Thanks.

the spring sat down on the perches. also you might want to check the steering arm

You may find someone on the site in your area looking to go up. Maybe do a little switcharoo.

Good idea.   Anybody in the Middle Georgia area looking for about a 5" lift?  I'm looking for stock to no more than a 2" lift.  ;D
