Title: Engine Questions

I have a 1976 k10 with a straight Six in it that is giving me some problems so I would like to replace it. I have two options right now. A friend of mine has a 1969 Chevy that he converting into a drag truck and is pulling out the original engine, a 307. He will sell me the entire set up, engine, carb, flywheel, exhaust for $250. OR I have a 305 that my uncle will give to me.

Which one of these should a pursue? Or should I look elsewhere? I really don't know much about engines, but I really want to learn so this truck is kind of a learning process for me. So any insight you have is most welcome!

I think you can get more out of the 307 than the 305. Id go for the 307. Alot of them were 200 hp from the factory with a 2 barrel. I dont know if the 305 ever came out with 200 hp

I have a 2bbl 307 sitting in my blazer. Strong running engine but a wimp nonetheless. I wouldn't waste my time building either if I wanted decent power. 350's are still plentiful and cost the same to build with much nicer results. Search craigslist. There was a vortec roller 350 motor for $150 bucks here 2 weeks ago.

The last rebuild kit for a 307 I checked on was actually more than a 350. Vile has got the better idea as usual

Too bad you live too far from me I have a 350 already disassembled and seasoned along with a complete kit including pistons cam lifter I would let you have for the same as the 307 just to get it out of here.

Ha! Where do you live?

So what is a good price to pay for a 350?
And if I get a 350 that opens up a whole new world of questions, such as transmission, radiator, carb... do I need heavier shocks? In essence how much is involved to put a 350 in? I don't mind doing the work but money can be a bit of an issue.
