Title: Is there such a thing as locking bolts/nuts?
Post by: Wilymakeit on April 10, 2009, 06:11:11 pm
Hello  I am getting ready to bolt on a Double/Double Stainless Steel Roll Bar, alot of cash invested, very easy to unbolt and steal, I know there are locking nuts for wheels, does anybody know if there is such a bolt and nut for what I am looking for, I thought there might be something like a carriage bolt with an indentation on the top to accept a special tool for tightening or loosening and a nut similar to wheels using the same indentation tool, I know it would require 2 people and 2 tools but at least it would make it that much harder for it to be stollen, I guess I could makeup a square steel plate, weld the bolts in the holes and just use the wheel nut locks, if anybody knows of such bolts/nuts or has a solution, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Jeeps always used tamper resistant torx bits which basically equal stripped out nightmares when you try to remove them. Do you really live in such a bad area someone would wrench out your rollbar?

you could grind the bolt flush with the nut and then put a small weld on them. If you have to remove them you would have to grind past the weld but I doubt any theives would show up with a grinder to steal your rollbar.

I used 5 point bolts the other day and watched 3 of my students spend 10 minutes trying to figure out why they couldn't get the right size socket on them lol

Maybe you could use these with carriage bolts.

Great Info, I searched but could not find anything like you guys came up with,  I did not think I lived in a bad area, but the fact is these Roll Bars are expensive, just to easy to unbolt and walk away with them, I definitely have a few screws loose paying $2000, thats the price you have to pay when you live in CANADA, I am trying to talk myself out of buying them, I keep convincing myself I don't need them and then when I see the truck I need them again, one of those things I planned on buying when I started to build this truck, I just cannot picture my truck without them now , truck looks naked without them, I will look into the options you guys listed here, thanks again for the great info.

If you don't find anything and are sure you want it to be permanent, just use a carriage bolt from the top and a regular nut and then tack weld the nut to the bolt.  You'll have to cut the nut off to remove it (so use a washer under the nut) but it's not something that gets removed all the time anyway.

There's also a company caled Tuffy that makes theft resistant bolts.

Keep in mind if they really want it they will just take the whole truck. Hopefully your truck is appraised and insured for a stated value if you have big $$ invested in it.

Yep U R right, they could try and take the whole truck, I prepared my truck as much as possible to prevent this from happening, just like these roll bars, I am just trying to make it as difficult as possible for the SOB who is gonna try to take it
