Title: 82 chevy c10 dies sometimes at intersections?
Post by: Justinsyrell on April 11, 2009, 07:49:43 pm
82 chevy c10 dies sometimes at intersections? I need some advice from you all! When the truck is cold if I let off of the gas it will die every time. And when it is cold when I step on the gas to fast it bogs out. And after the truck is warmed up at intersections when I stop it sometimes dies. What do you all think, I just bought it so I do not know when the last tune up was maybe 10 years ago! I was thinking of running some carb cleaner that you put in the gas tank through the truck, do you think this might help, or what do you suggest. Thanks Much, Justin

you don't have a tach do ya--wonder what the idle rpm is

You could have any one of a long list of things wrong....
choke adjustment
air fuel mix wrong
vacuum leak
timing
idle set too low
etc...

Does she run good at high speeds?

Not to hijack the thread, but my '87 does the same exact thing, except I have TBI. I'm thinking maybe my TBI to intake manifold gasket is bad and it's causing a vacuum leak there.

if your tbi does that, it is the idle air control valve  that keeps the tbi working w/ a specific amt of gas/air.

my truck used to act similar....the cause ended up being a clogged fuel filter...so i would check that and if its dirty then replace it and see what happens

I posted in your thread the same way I did in this one. I changed my fuel filter, didn't make a difference.

Unofficial, you mention you think the idling problem may be the gasket for the Throttle body.  There is an easy test to see if air is getting under there, and that is the good ole WD40 spray trick.  Spray some WD40 around the base when your truck is idling, if the rpms shoot up, you found a vacuum leak.

But, I believe the idle air control valve and computer would compensate for that to some degree, therefore, I beleive what I posted earlier about the idle air control valve

I think I will replace the fuel filter first and do a complete tune up on the truck and see if that helps. The engine runs good when it is not at idle, not only does it run good it sounds good, just dieing at intersections. I must push on the gas just a little at intersections to keep the truck running, thats how I am driving the truck for now. And it does seem to idle low, how do I adjust the idle, is it just a screw? Thanks Much, Justin

you should have a screw  on the lever where your accelerator linkage meets the lever/carb.  YOu'll see a spring too to keep the lever down unless pushing on it with your foot.  Anyway, there is a screw on that lever that you can adjust so that the lever doesn't go down all the way, the more turns you put in it, changes how low (or not so low) the lever goes back.

You probably have a vacuum leak.  Take some WD40 and spray around hoses and such, gaskets, etc. and see if idle increases.

I would try that, but my parents took my truck away and I probably won't be seeing it anytime soon, if ever again. Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll try it if I get it back.

Always keep a box of fresh doughnuts in the truck for a roadside bribe. :D

My dad wouldn't have taken the vehicle away--heck since i practically built the old mustang with my own two hands, he would just make me pay the insurance, which would probably double after a ticket conviction.
