Title: Hoods
Post by: VileZambonie on April 13, 2009, 07:31:43 PM
I would like to start a thread on the different hoods 73-87 chevy trucks had and aftermarket hoods. Anything from fiberglass to stock. I know two 73-80 hoods were made and one 81-87 (91) factory hood but seeing that weirdo hood a few weeks ago made me think we need a thread on hoods. So I want to see your obscure or aftermarket hoods so please post pics even your home made jobs.

Here is my Goodmark steel cowl induction hood for 81-87 (91) trucks. It fits great.
My 88 blazer had a Harwood fibreglass cowl induction hood on it (way back before anyone made a steel one for them). It took alot of work to make it fit right.

I am installing a 4" fiberglass cowl scoop on my stock hood, I wanted the taller cowl, I could only find the steel hoods with 2" cowl. We just put the first layer of glass on it last night, I take pictures when finished.

Thats one thing that has bugged me. I have wanted a steel hood with a 3 inch cowl for years. I guess they cant build a 3 inch due to the stress on the metal making that amount of bend in the die??? I dont know if thats right, but its all I can figure.

I don't remember where these came from, but I've had these images saved for awhile. They are most certainly not my truck, but I've thought about it..if I had a mig welder and some sheetmetal skills. Also, I think the "Trail Cleanup Truck" had a taller cowl hood, but I don't recall if it was fiberglass or steel.

So whats the main difference between the 73-78 and 79-80?

From what I can see its just a minor lip on the very front of the hood?

That is correct.

I can't seem to link to a pic of this hood, so I'll try to upload it. I love the look and I would make it functional, sealing it to my air cleaner.

US Body Source also makes a 4" cowl hood for the person that was looking for one.

Chris, Isn't there something with the latch/safety catch also that changed in '79 also? Now I can't think how it is...do you need to change the latch to match the hood if you change over to the "new" style or vice versa? Lorne

Do you mean the inner hood release? That was an option but the hood was the same. The latches were different.

Vile, I was referring to the '79-'80 hoods bolt-on striker pin on the underside. The older ones had a pin & the newer had a loop type, Right? Does the plate that bolts on the hood with this pin, bolt on in the same way? I have done this before, but it's been years! It seems to me I remember changing the top piece on the rad support? I guess what I'm saying/asking is...If you had a "basket case" '77 truck without a hood, but had the rad support & you went to the junkyard & got a '80 hood...you would have to go back & get either a older striker (if it bolts on) or the latch from the '79-'80 before you could latch your hood, Right? Or is my memory fadding? Thanks, Lorne

my 78 has that big loop thing for a latch no pin.

Hood latches are broken down like this
73-74 (this has the release in the middle)

these are the one that are offset
75-76
77-80

This is a completely different setup.
81-87(91)

I have a question, if I remember right, my 79 has the hood release from insde the truck. Since Im stripping it out, could I save these peices and put it on an earlier truck that didnt have the internal release? Thats the only thing I dont like about the earlier trucks.

Ok...We're getting somewhere. Now does all of the latch striker plates under the hood bolt on the same '73-'80 (4 bolts that tread into the bottom of the hood) which makes any hood fit any truck (as long as you have a matching latch) on the bottom to go with the top? What is with the "off-set" one? Is this what makes me think I changed the top rad support piece once, I just didn't have the right upper piece? Thanks, Lorne

ok, that was a typo on the offset, all of the 75-80's are offset 73-74's were the ones with the latch handle in the center...

1977 was the first year for the underhood latch release.  The latch can be used on any 77-80.

I'm kind of partial to the reflexxion dual cowl, looks like the one I had on my 01 Silverado.

My 78 didn't have the lip, but the hood I just bought from a '73 does.  I ran into a gal that had an original '75 with no lip.  So, what's with the lip?  What years or trim models came with the lip on the front?

I posted this in your other thread...  but no 75 came with the lip on the front, nor did the 73.  That was 79-80 ONLY.

I'm not seeing this lip on the 79-80 hood as compared to the 73-78 hood.  the hoods look similar.  aside from the hood ornament which I would like to find because I think mine came with one as there are holes in the hood where a ornament would be... I think.  on my 76 Blazer I had a fiberglass hood that stepped down, I will see if I can dig up a picture.

that's really interesting, to think a manufacturer made a tool change for something that minor.

Ok, apparently this place sells a repro of that drop hood:

i love it, but it won't fit an 81 and up?

What year did they use the hook post on the firewall?

I've seen some that has a post bolted to the centrr of the firewall and a hole in the hood support brace on the bottom of the hood
Presumably to keep it from going back thru the windshield in a crash

And I still don't see any "lip"

It isn't really a "lip" is it a raised portion on the front.

I think up to 1978 had the center post but it is hit or miss on why.

I finally found a pic that I could see the extra line on the front

Never noticed it before

The one I saw with the post in the center of the firewall was a 80 i think

Looked like the little post the door latches onto

I just ordered a new hood for my 74 gmc. It appears the replacements are modeled after the 79-80? Will I need to change a lot to make it work?

no mods. its just a cosmetic difference on a raised lip on the front

So all the existing hardware will switch over? I don't need to move my center mount release? Ease just going through this thread and saw there were more Subtle  differences.
