Title: My 73 GMC project!!
Post by: sampsonjoseph on April 17, 2009, 03:54:51 am
I just got the truck about a month ago and since then i done a complete tune up, hei distributor, hurst shifter, new carb, tinted windows, replaced the white bumpers and mirrors with chrome ones, new weather stripping on both doors.  There is very little rust on it and it has never been to the body shop. It is very straight and runs pretty good with a few minor bugs i need to work out.  It needs alot of TLC in the interior section but in time it will look nice.  I only paid 900 dollars for it and drove it home.  I believe it will make a good project truck.  Did i get a good deal?

Just unbelievable that someone trades a '73 truck with no rust for so little money!  :o

I would like to put a 350 with a 700R4 automatic trans in it when i get the money, but i'm not sure if i can still use my steering column since it used to be 3 speed on the tree.  If any one has a good used dash for sale i would like to buy it.  It is a gmc custom 1500.

Great buy. Looks like a promising project in your future. Keep us posted as the work progresses. Also, welcome from Altus, OK.....home of Altus Air Force Base.

I dont think so, but you could remove the shift lever, and put a slick ratchet shifter in the floor.

You will need a column from an automatic truck to get it to have a column shift.  Grab all the shifter linkage and brackets all the way from the column to the transmission. A column from a later model truck will have the correct quadrants for the 4 sp auto, but they are also the crappy plastic column that any punk with a screw driver can break to steal the truck.  I have a 74 with a 700r4 in it, I used the original column and made some mods to the shifter cross bar to get it the shift smoothly into gear.  There is a small down side to the way I did it, I can not pull the transmission into 1st gear but how offen do you need to manually shift a automatic except when in a racing situation.  Great deal on the truck, I thought I did good at 2100.

Swapping a manual for an automatic means much work and some dough, since it requires so many different parts. Purchasing a donor truck or buying most of the parts at once from someone else's junk truck might be a good idea.

I think that swapping for a stick shifted manual w/ OD, like the NV-4500, might be at least a little bit simpler swap. But then again, if you prefer automatic, you do.

If you want it to have a th-700 and are ready to put the effort in, go for it, since it's a truck well worth it!  :)
