OK, don't flame me but i went through as much of this section and i could not for the life of me find a thread that could help.
Here is my situation:
I have an 85 k20 th350 all that good stuff. Went to pull forward the other night and as i passed through R the whole truck jolted backwards..i thought nothing of it, i figured this old truck shifts hard. But then when i got to the end of the drive i went for R and it wasnt there. Is my trans shot?
EDIT:
Well, i found a th400 out of a van but im worried about how the splines will work coming out of a 2wd van into a 4wd truck.
-
Did you check the trans fluid level?? If its full then it is possible the tranny went south.
-
just don't drive anywere that you need to back up ;) you be OK

We are full of advice here, aren't we? ;D

Check the fluid level. If ok check your linkage adjustment. If ok drop the pan and inspect. check the operation of the manual valve. Let us know what you find.

Once he drops the pan it`ll be like he hit triple 7s on a slot machine lol...... ;D
thanks

yeahhhhhhh i win
had a Buddy i forget what car he had but it was a small car, he lost reverse and some of his friends played jokes on him he would park it in the middle of a parking lot so he can just pull out. well they lifted it up and drug it to a curb were he would have to back out of. ::)

Well i haven't checked the fluid level yet but i'm pretty sure its gone. Does anyone have any experience with autozone rebuild kits? Im going to do this myself and i cant afford to buy junk parts but i cant afford to buy the super duper ones either. So the zone is at 56$ and NAPA is at $139, as far as i know neither have the new reverse band so ill need one of those too, $25 on ebay. Then im sure ill need a whole bunch of tools that i dont have ~ another $100. and thats not too bad considering some of the posts ive read in the past few days of people getting quotes were always at least $500. Wish me luck.

Why don't you check the fluid level and do as everyone recommended first before you start spending money on parts and tools you may not even need.

Buying a rebuild kit before pulling out a dipstick ::)
-
last time I did that to one, I lost reverse, 2nd gear and 1st slipped bad. though I was backing up a hill floored with a load and knocked it into drive by mistake... ::)
-
from what i can remember reverse is the first to go when you lose your tranny fluid

I have checked the fluid, its fine. It was just a little low so i added some fluid and still no help. I have all forward gears still just no reverse. So i found a th400 but its out of a van, id like to go get it tonight but im worried about the splines and if it will bolt up to my np203?
