My 77 1/2 ton stepside has a 4 speed transmission (Muncie, I think??) and I tried to remove the shifter a while ago and could not get it to release. Chilton's says push down on the shifter, rotate clockwise and shifter will come out ???. Did that and it would not release. Truck is at body shop 90 miles away but when I get it home I want to remove tranny. What did I do wrong? Any tips appreciated.

The description sounds right, however maybe you misunderstood what to do. The "push down" part, takes the tension off, then you turn the retaining ring "counter-clockwise" (unscrew like) a quarter turn, then the shifter lever pulls up out. Hope this helps, once you do it...you will be saying "Why was that so hard?" Lorne

You are pushing down on the metal collar and twisting and not the shifter right.

I believe that is the Muncie M20 trans. ANd what I did is i kind of leaned my shoulder on the shifter then reached down pushed down the little collar and twisted that then it popped right out.

I just pushed down on the shifter and rotated it clockwise. Did not know the collar needs to be turned while holding the shifter down. Will give it a try when I get to the truck in a week or so. Thanks guys!!

It is a SM465 (RPO M20) you shouldn't have to do anything to the shifter, just push down on the collar and turn.

are you rotating the shifter or the retaining cap? You should be pushing down the cap and turning, not the shifter.

Will give that a try. Thanks. Won't see the truck for a week or so. Will let you know how I did!!
