Title: Building a Trazer...
Post by: exilous on April 25, 2009, 06:29:50 pm
Has anyone here done it? or know someone who has done it? One of my friends suggested that I do it when im done building my dump. Seeing as how I will have 2 somewhat complete blazer chassis sitting in front of my shop. Although both of the blazer tubs and cabs are completely shot and rotted gone. So I figured I'd grab a somewhat decent cab while the blazer chassis is stripped throw a cab on it and sell it make a quick buck. I just want to know if the cab mounts are the same and if there are any other things that would need to be modified or changed in putting a pickup cab on a blazer frame.

Are you talking about enclosing a blazer? Because that's how most of them I've seen have been done.

Well I guess that would work. A couple guys I know know about a trazer or CK5. Whatever you want to call it. You take a regular cab off a truck and mount it on a k5 frame and it has like a super short bed looks kinda retarded in my opinion I tried googling it and came up with some pics nothing showing really how to do it or go about doing it. Just wondering if anyone here has done it or seen it done.

I wouldnt mind enclosing a blazer but both my blazer bodies are destroyed from rot but the frames are both very good. and right now up here no one is really buying anything for parts or buildups or anything. For awhile I tried to give away my whole rolling K5 chassis from my last parts blazer the thing was beautiful not a  spec of rot on it...i couldnt give the axles or hubs or nothing away i ended up scrapping the whole rolling chassis for $45 at a scrap yard and I don't want to do that again. and I dont really have a spot to hold onto them forever till i find a buyer for something. so i figured i'd slam a truck cab on it and call it a day since i have plenty of parts to build one up or at least put it together to make it leave.

I would love to see it done. I've seen a few but they were real beaters. I've kicked around the idea of doing it to my 94 full size Blazer.
You mentioned selling it when you are done. I don't think they would be worth any $$. Like you said, you can't give these parts away now. If your building this rig as a way to sell of all of your spare parts, it's a tough call.

ya i know, thats why i wanted to see if it would be easy to do the swap. i've got a cab ive got extra fenders hoods grilles drivetrain will all be there just gotta through the sheetmetal on and go. I mean I'll ahve all my paint gear out anyway from painting my C30 so I'll slap a quick coat on the "Trazer" and send it on its way. but if there is a ton of mods i'd have to do along with lots of customization to the frame I guess i'll just hold onto the parts I have and see if i can off them 1 at a time.

I'll put it to ya this way, i'm renting a shop to do my C30 project truck and to get away from it all a place to just be alone and work alone. when the project is done all the bigger items ( cabs frames fenders hoods) and the like won't be able to travel back to my place. only small like interior pieces and emblems and stupid stuff that sells good would be able to come home. so the longer i hold onto that stuff the less money it would potentially make me.

Ya I kinda figured the bed wouldn't. I figured I would end up making some sort of crappy flatbed or just putting the cab on and trying to sell it like that. I did find a website that had some pics and it was a bunch of mixed reviews on the conversion. take a look at the pics and see what you guys think.

interesting concept to say the least. I like how the one guy did it with a pickup crossmember he did a good job.

I have done two C 10 cabs on K5 frames. Both of them I used the two wheel drives rear cab mount / cross member. I mounted the front cab mounts, and the core support mounts. Then raised / lowered the cab until the door fender line was correct. Bolted the cross member to the rear cab mounts, and welded it to the frame, made a few gussets to fill the gap as it lands right about where the frame curves up. First one I put a steel flat bed on. The second one I slid the rear spring perches back on the frame about 4". I used a step side body, deleted the steps, and slid the fenders forward on the box. At first glance it looked like a regular short bed. Then you had to do a double take. to see what it was.

ohhh very cool idea, so you just had to put that crossmember in and measure the height so the body lines matched up? everything else bolted up pretty well im assuming

Im not sure on the tire size, I forgot. He has a tendency to build everything overkill. It all works well, and will handle alot. The funny thing about this one is that it has all of the best parts in ut for some serious offroading, bigblock(500+hp),built 4l80e ( I think) Dana 70 rear, Dana 60 front the works, but will just be a street queen. He has built, sold, repurchased, and now rebuilding this truck for many years.

That's nuts.  Time to have your friend committed.

Just bolted the front mounts down, then jacked the rear of the cab until the door to fender body lines where correct. Double checked measurements from a truck for something to roughly go by.

At the track last weekend I saw a beautiful early 80's 2wd Jimmy that the guy put a truck cab rear wall in. Looked like a shorty pickup but the announcer said look closely behind the door: there's no gap. It was a Jimmy that he made into a truck. It was beautiful! Guy left before I could take pics of it though but I'm sure I'll see him again. It was running 11's  :o

Me neither. I have a 76 K5 with nothing useful but the rolling chassis, and this thread is giving me ideas ;D

Very interesting....  Probably look better without a front bumper or with a rear.  I would like to see one in person...

Aside from being yellow, that's a pretty tasty lil toy. I'd personally like to see it stretched a couple more inches and painted something less ugly... but to each their own

If I can get my hands on a Blazer frame, that's what I plan to build.  I'm not sure how I'd like it in person, I wish I could find more pics of that one online.

I just got myself a 82 Blazer frame and I'm gonna see if I can buy my friend's 78 longbed for the cab, bed, front suspension, and rear axle. The plan is to build something similar to that yellow one.

Oh, man. A Trazer with a dump bed would be frickin' PERFECT for most of the work we're doing around our property. I think it'd be a lot easier to just find a nice swb K10.... but I do so love having a longbed....

I can see how some folks end up with lots of these trucks.

I got the blazer here at the house and I'm gonna go pick up the 78 longbed tomorrow.  I'll start a build thread soon if any of ya'll want to check it out and chime in.  I'm sure I'll need plenty of help and advice.

I gave up on it for a while because I didn't trust my fabrication skills.  I also found a 1976 SWB to fix instead.  But my buddy really liked the '76 so I traded it to him for a 79 Z28.  As soon as I sell the Z28 I'm gonna try to tackle the Trazer project.

Those are the only pics I got of it.  It looked awesome after I cleaned it up and put the hood on.  I ended up selling it this weekend though.  Now it's time to start on the trazer...after the races of course.

I started working on the trazer again yesterday.  I got the 2wd crossmember torn down and now I'm gonna try to fit it to the blazer frame and drill the new holes.  Hopefully it all goes smooth today.  I'll update when I'm done fitting it.
Title: Re: Building a Trazer...
Post by: team39763 on April 23, 2011, 03:02:50 pm
Here's my update.

The 2wd crossmember won't physically fit on the blazer frame.  The frame appears to be too wide.  I'm working on squeezing it down with ratchet straps, but so far it's not enough.  I may just have to cut the stock blazer frame bracing off then try again...DANGIT!...I hate cutting these huge factory rivets.

EDIT:
Looks like the previous owner slammed the truck on a rock/boulder or bottomed it out hard and bent the frame up pretty good, that's why the crossmember woundn't fit.  The section where the crossmember goes was hit from the bottom and dented in and that pushed the side out.  It's ugly and really disappointing.  The frame is also cracked in two spots where the steering box goes.  Any suggestions?  Should I stop while I'm ahead?
