No it's not another chevy, but a ford. but it's not a bad ford, it a tractor. to be exact is a 1958 ford 801 powermaster diesel. It hasn't run in about 8 years. I'm gonna see if I can get it runnin and if so I'll use it around the property. We have a 2000 new holland tn55 but this old one is too cool. Grandad bought it used around 1960 and used it until around 2000-2001. 40 years of use ain't bad at all. Just thought some of you tractoring guys might wanna see this.
This is it after a good powerwashing.

love it! crank that sucker up!
-
Looks very close to my dad's, soon to be mine, 1953 NAA Jubilee
-
Very nice, it will probably crank right up...
-
I just sold my 53 Jubilee, but have a 47 8n that had an engine fire, that I hope to restore some day. I just need a hood and one rear fender. It is amazing how many parts are still available for these tractors.

Yes, The front end pivot bushing went on mine which whittled the solid shaft between the crank and front pump. I thought I would actually have to get the stuff made but no, everything was in stock at the local Ford tractor dealer.
-
My dad has a '56 Ford tractor (gas) that we cleared out land with growing up---all 7 acres and tree stumps too! That puppy was tough. I fell off of those rear wheel fenders so many times as a kid, probably did brain damage I hit the ground so many times---at least that's the excuse I use now.
He still has it, but, hasn't run in a few years now...took the generator off and put a GM alternator on it, and that's about all themods he did over the years.
-
I got the hood off and drained the tank and took off everything fuel related except the injector pump for cleaning. It's not too bad just a lot of water in it. It turns over good and the electrical is mostly good, except a few small wires. I'm gonna go to the pic and pull and get a gm alternator so I can ditch the regulator and just generally upgrade it, it's a diesel so it's already 12 volts. The radiator is shot bad though, he didn't have the front end (grille and hood) bolted down in the front so it beat the crap out of the core, guess I'll get it re-cored. I got the valves adjusted and there's not much buildup at all (I was surprised). The tranny is real good jsut the engine is worn and the hydraulics are about shot. If I can get it running decent maybe I'll fix the hydraulics too, we'll see. Right now its just a tinkering project so I can ride around on it but you know it'll probably turn inti a big job, oh well. At least the tanks clean, I hate cleaning nasty tanks out. The thing it needs the most is a steering wheel, the old plastic grip on it has half cracked and broken off and is sharp as heck. When I get it running that will be the first thing I buy for it.
If it should turn into a big project, I do know what to do with it. I want to get some turf tires on the back and a nice belly mower for it and make a nice sized lawn mower out of it since I don't need to use implements behind it since we have another tractor for that.
Here's the pics

It's grown to a project now.... It won't start, because of the injector pump, so that's off getting redone. Then about $350 in other parts to get it back fully operational again. I decided to clean it up and since the grease it what's keeping it from rusting more, it's paint time. It'll be a nice rattlecan paint job, if such a thing exists...lol If all goes well I'd like to put a woods bellymower under it and mow grass with it. either way I just wanna drive it around. I played on it all the time when I was small but never got to drive it, so maybe now I'll be able to. I'm not painting it the proper colors, I'm just painting it bright-red and bright-white, but I will keep to the OE paint scheme, more or less.

Ya those old ford tractors are very interchangeable...i know multiple models from I believe the early 40s up to the mid to late 60s use a lot of the same parts. We have had a handful of those tractors pass through our farm up here and they are great and very powerful...we never had a diesel one though. Good luck with it. Have fun they are great tractors.
-
Cool project! I always wanted a larger tractor like that or a Cub. I've only had garden tractors like Wheelhorses and Case. It'll look awesome when it's done factory colors or not.
-
very cool

I found out today it's actually an 841 model and not an 801. Still basically the same thing as an 801 though. I brushed off more around where the serial number is and found 841-D for 841 diesel. Also when sanding the old powermaster decals off the left hood side, I found another decal under the 801 powermaster decal that was on it.
Here's a pic for you guys. You can barely see the 841 under the "WERM" in powermaster. It says 841. Cool stuff, This is fun ;D

Brings back memories of my 1948 Massey Harris 30
best of luck

thanks for the comments guys. Maybe it will run this week. I'm supposed to go pickup the rebuilt diesel pump on tuesday.
If anybody want to see this progress, I started a build thread on a tractor forum I joined.

I always gotta be takin stuff apart, huh? just can't leave well enough alone ;D
-
Wow, nice progress!
-
It's like archeology, except you get to bring them back to life!
-
Nice powermaster! I wanted one of those forever ago. They are great looking tractors. Back when I was 11 I bought a 1941 Farmall H. Still working on it(on and off). I completely rebuilt the motor myself(besides the head and machining work). I put all new bearings in(even cam), had the crank refinished, new sleeves, larger pistons, and had the head milled down slightly for more compression. not too much more to go on it but my silverado project is my main concern for now. Once I get my truck finished I'll finish my tractor and use my truck to haul it......maybe...sounds like a good idea though. lol
here is a pic of me puttin my engine in from a while back.

Keep us posted on the restoration!

That engine looks good!
I got my injector pump back today. $477, but hey I'm getting white smoke so it's working! lol It took all day to find out how to set the pump timing, and it was late so I got it timed and we'll drag it around with the other tractor again tomorrow and maybe well get some black smoke instead of just white.... If it'll run, I'm $350 away from the engine trans being fully functional again. New radiator, hoses t-stat, all guages and battery, alternator, steering wheel, and tie rod ends. I'll get to the hydraulics later, I just wanna ride it around... ;D I'll also have a shop manual on the way tomorrow, so maybe this will get easier, it sure helped when I got the one for the truck!
Here's what a $477 Rebuild looks like.... I got screwed if size counts...lol

Degrease that motor and repaint it and that engine will look just as good as that injector pump :D
thanks

I got it running today. actually tonight, I still rode it around the yard 4 times. ;D It needs a little tuning etc, and I want to get the radiator and t-stat so it can get up to temperature. Right now theres not even a t-stat so after 10 minutes of running I can still touch the head comfortably, not great for diesels. also broke the seat, dang oh well
Here's yall a video of it running finally. Doesn't sound too bad at all for sitting 10 years and being 50 years with no overhaul of any kind!

I'll bet you were tickled to death when it fired. That's cool!
-
I say you fully restore the 'ol girl. Those things can be worth a TON of money once restored... Plus you cant have that nice of a truck and a ratty tractor... ;D
-
X2
When my dad finally downsizes and doesn't need the 53 NAA I am going to make her brand new again.
-
We're going to get the injectors rebuilt and calibrated, and it needs rings, so at least rings, maybe rod bearings if they look bad. Surprisingly it was only running fully on 3 out of 4 cylinders in the video. But When I rode it around and got the temp up close to operating, most of the smoke went away and it sounded pretty good, can't wait till the new injectors and rings are in it.
We'll do the engine up and then move on to the tranny. I think the trans is fine, just needs a flush. Same with the rear end. My dad rebuilds hydraulic stuff all the time so there shouldn't be a problem when I get to the hyd. systems.
-
A bit of progress. My new parts got here, new guages, radiator, steering wheel, and other small stuff.
Bought a new reprint shop manual and found an original owners manual on ebay. That used owners manual is in PERFECT condition except a bit faded on the spine like it was on the shelf in between other books.
New fuel return line, Everything like that will be swagelock SS fittings (I got the hook up on that stuff ;D)
Fixed the seat where it broke
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t195/wes2880/Ford%20801%20Powermaster%20Diesel/New%20PartsandWiring/SeatRepair.jpg)
a spare K&N filter I had made to work till I get the stack back on
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t195/wes2880/Ford%20801%20Powermaster%20Diesel/New%20PartsandWiring/SpareKN.jpg)
Got everything Wired up and working except lights, though the switch is there and works. The steering box has been painted so the dash stuff won't have to come back off.
I decided to go ahead and put it to work to get the engine cleaned out and to see if the rings will seal a bit better through hard use. So I put the hood back on to keep trees out of my new radiator and stuff
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t195/wes2880/Ford%20801%20Powermaster%20Diesel/6-10-2009%20Hood%20on%20for%20work/GEDC0002.jpg)
It's coming along. Theres a slight leak of hydraulic fluid into the tranny It's not bad enough I can't use it though so I will. The hydraulics hold great, With that pulverizer on it fully raised, I measured a drop of 1-5/16" over a 5 hour time span, so I'm quite happy with that. The engine seems to be freeing up and getting its power back. It will need rings no matter what, but it's very usable right now. Tranny is good and the clutch seems good from what i can tell. I need a couple gaskets for the engine and it won't be oily on the outside anymore ;)
I'm loving it though, It doesn't have a front end loader on it like the TN55 so I can get into tighter places and turn around a lot easier on the ford. I got the wrong thermostat for it though, so I gotta hunt the diesel t-stat to get it up to temp. It's a lot better than it was though since it didn't have a t-stat when I took the neck off. with no t-stat that thing won't get above 125-130* no matter how hard I worked it. Now it;s running about 160* or so. But I want to get it to about 190* like it should be. The hunt is on.
-
That's awesome. Are you eventually going to do the wheels and frame or are you going to run it like it is? Looks great!!
-
Thanks whity, It will be a month or 2 before I can put anymore money into it, so I'm going to use it here and there until then. Once I get rings put in it and get it to where oil doesn't leak out and make a mess everywhere I will paint the whole thing. I just don't wanna paint on it too much until then. I'll paint the wheels when I get the new front tires; I'm going to use the old rear tires as long as they last. The tractor has no added ballast whatever so they don't make imprints in the grass, only the front ribbed tires mess the turf up. I have put 10 hours on it so far. I used it today to drag out some dirt up against the house and I must say I liked not having to mind the front end loader like on the tn55. I used the tn55 to haul the dirt up and the 841 to smooth it out, they make a great team ;D Once I get it painted up, I'll get a 6' or 7' finish mower and paint it up to match the tractor.
-
Looks great. I would love to do another tractor, maybe someday, and for myself. The Farmall I did a few years back for my buddy. I have posted them before but some of you might not have seen them.

Dang blazin you know we can't be havin' stuff that nice in one of my threads ;)
J/K That's a nice machine there. Mine won't be that nice, just a worker. Hopefully somewhere down the road I'll be able to do a full blown resto like that to mine, I'd love that. It'll get there.
-
That one hasn't been run, or moved since about two weeks after I finished it. Just sits in the corner of his shop for his concrete business, covered with plastic!

That's a shame. He should have it on display. He should also take it out for a spin once in a while. At any rate, you do exceptional work, Blazin. Thanks for sharing.
-
Yeah I get after him all the time to at least cruise it around his property. He has an 03 100th anniversary edition Fat Boy that only has 1,400 miles on it. approx 250 of which I put on it.
-
I don't know how people can let cool stuff like that sit. I'd be out using that one, but probably wouldn't beat on it since I have the newer bigger tractor, and then when I got it good and scratched up, I'd repaint it and start all over again.
-
Got yall a few pics of the new paint. This is all I have done. I won't paint the engine itself until I have it running right and not leaking anymore.

SWEET :o
-
I like the tractor. I have been around them all my life though and have never seen one tire mounted correctly and one mounted backwards. Why is it like that?
-
Thanks. I dunno why it's like that, grandad can't remember why either, he never messed with the offsets on the wheels. I thought about turning the tire around when I painted the wheel, but it would have probably ruined the tire and I'd like to use them as long as they'll last so I left it alone.
I like to tell people the tires are like that so I can get traction in forward and reverse... ;)
-
Thanks for sharing this and putting in all that time to save a classic tractor! If there's one thing I like more than cars'n'trucks, it's antique tractors, especially diesels. Great job. ;D
-
I haven't technically made any more progress, but the tractor seems to be freeing up pretty good and I'm going to start using it for my gardens. I'm going to try planting my peanuts with twin rows instead of single rows to I needed a 72" track width and the fords air filled tires are sooooo much easier to handle than the new hollands water filled tires so the ford gets row setting duty. i still havent painted the engine yet, it will no question need rings at a minimum, but kid stuff came up so it's on hold for a bit. Heck I havent even fixed the stuff wrong with the truck yet...lol
Here it is with the track widened to 72" on center. It looks kinda like a bug or something, but on the upside it'll be less likely to tip over now. The cultivator isn't set up yet to do twin rows so ignore how it's setup.
