1987 half ton tbi. 350, auto 700R4-
Thought this one was fixed, but....
From time to time the ignition won't work. No instrument lights, no ignition. Headlights do work. 12.4 volts at the battery. Battery cables tight.
It wouldn't jump start with jumper cables. Still no ignition or instrument lights. I let it sit overnight and went back to work on it and it started right up. Drove it home 25 miles to work on it. Dropped the steering column to check wiring at the ignition switch. All look good. Elect connector is ok. Same for the rod between the key switch and ignition switch. Put it back together. Still starts ok now, so here we go again. Maybe I ought to just get a new ignition switch?

Did you pull the switch apart? It sounds like it is going bad.
-
No I didn't take it off the column..
-
it sounds like a loose or bad wire on the starter check the small wire thats connected to the solenoid and see how it looks. it will cause the same problems
-
check your fusible links and connections. If the integrity is good, replace the switch.
-
Aha. The wire from the battery at the starter was loose enough to move by hand. Tightened it but I still need to check the fusible links to be sure the problem's fixed. I looked at a wiring schematic. It looks like GM replaced a fuse link at the ecm with a 10 amp fuse in 87. The weather is keeping me at bay for now. Thanks again guys.
