So I thought it would be interesting to bring up what everyone's pet peves are about our trucks.
I'll start my list here:
The factory wheel offset, just look how far in the wheels were tucked and the track on a 4x4
The steering column is too tall
The ugly big mirrors with the long bracket
The radio
ok and my biggest most recent aftermarket pet peve haas become the visor. I am sick visors! ;D
-
hrm my pet peave would have to be uhm well i dont really have any, although i dont like those factory covered tripod mirrors...i am more of a west coast style mirror...i prefer to have an "octpus mounted on the side of my door...you all will get a kick out of the custom mirror brackets I plan on making for my truck its gonna be ridiculous...
-
I think the cab should be longer for more leg room. It's hard to get an aftermarket seat that fits well. And the biggest thing, how easy they rust :'(
-
How about the dual tanks being filled on differant sides?? They should have filled from one side like F**d did it.
-
i love these trucks but the rust would have to be mine
-
the lack of possible speaker setups behind the passengers. Yeah, that's it.
the chrome trim on the 70's models is hard to work with after painting the truck.
they go too fast and therefore many tickets are passed out to Chevy powered trucks--i think that's profiling, really. Cops oughta pick on fords too, there are plenty of long downhills that can cause the fords to pick up speed and then nab them.
-
Vile pretty much summed it up for me, as well as Novadiecast about the fillers on both sides of the trucks. The only other thing I have related only to my particular trucks. That is that it seems no one kept records when they built them >:(
-

If you had a th400 like mine, your truck would slow down while coasting a 20% grade! LOL
My biggest beef is the lack of rust prevention.
-
After having an 81-87 pickup for 4 years, and now I have a 73-80, I get to watch the hood flutter around since it's not near as stiff as an 81-87 hood. I'd also like more cab room to recline the seat a bit while maintaining legroom. I bet 3 inches would make a huge difference.
-
#1 is the rust. In certain points they are just designed to be doomed. I know there are trucks and cars that rust even easier, but still.
1/2-ton drive shaft u-joints are pretty pathetic. And axles are not very strong either, considering the weight of these things. It's a cost efficiency thing, sure, but in a pretty annoying area.
Some minor flaws: 73-80 hood and its hinges, tilt steering column getting sloppy and being hard to tear apart to fix (just doing this w/ my 2wd), stock windshield washer...
I actually do like the tripod mirrors, and don't mind the short cab, even though I'm over 6'. These kind of things are just parts of the character of these trucks... :)
-
To many to list. But the cool thing is these days, there is a way to get around almost all of em.
-
After owning the 67-72 series, talk about a small cab, and the 88-on up with the real rust I am happy with my pair. They are inexpensive to buy, and parts interchange for many years. I look at the positive in my trucks. I think rust is a problem in certain areas of the country but the newer trucks 88 on up are worse off. My 85, had it for around 4 years now was from the St. Louis area and never spent a day in a garage. Yes it has the typical rust on it but I have never had to replace the brake lines or power booster like I had to on my 95.
-
Ahh yes the 73-80 popping hoods
I also forgot the highway gearing!
-
Want me to merge this topic with this one?
http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=800.0
-
Hey Vile, you forgot the factory trampoline bench seats.
I also forgot the highway gearing!
Do you mean 2.73's on 29" tires behind a 700R4 trans (1550 rpm @ 70 mph)? LOL.
-
The worst thing is the weak frames at the steering box. I have broke mine 3 times so far twice with the reinforcement plates on the frame. My father broke his 77 2wd silverado at the box twice.
-
LOL, I forgot about the trampoline seat!
My buddy pulled kis 77 K10 into the parking lot, turned left and his whole steering box ripped right off the frame and he hit a colt vista station wagon ;D
-
the turning radius of these trucks isn't the best.
the headliner likes to give in to the law of gravity--but, i guess anything 30 yrs old will eventually.
to get picky, there is a bolt that holds the door hinges on the cab that must be removed from under the dash, after removing the kick panel and after many curse words.
-
The awful quality dashpads that don't hold up!
-
Both of mine have all these little noises inside the cab. Most of them sound like they're coming from inside the dash and the air blowing through the window seals.
-
At least you would be getting some good highway mileage lol.
-
i definetly dont like the weak hoods, the weak doors, and i hate the hard to cure frame flex on my k10
-
The vent window air leaks are a big one! I almost forgot about that.
-
Every single truck like this has had window leaks dang it drives me nut's. Does the wing window delete wistle as well?
-
I put new wind wings on my truck and I DO NOT open them EVER. That should help the seals last longer.
-
I think the cab should be longer for more leg room. It's hard to get an aftermarket seat that fits well. And the biggest thing, how easy they rust :'(
X2!!!
And I never open my vent windows either.
-
I know if I was searching on the net for info on these trucks and came across this thread I sure wouldn't buy one. Keep it coming, that will more available for us when they pass them by.
-
I would have to go with the 10 bolt rear and the 700R4.
-
My personal truck? The A/C not working and the bonded title haha. In general though- the fact that GM did not keep any sort of record about wiring schematics for particular year/model/features etc... The dimensions of the factory am/fm cassete making it hard to install cd player. And yeah, the "trampoline seat" that someone mentioned. Especially because the driver's side foam on mine has a chunk missing, so I drive kinda tilted to the left, so when I go over a dip I feel like I'm about to f-ing rocket launch out the window! Haha. And oh! How about new bench seats costing 1000 bucks?! I could buy a whole new set for my living room for that much!!!! And yeah, I'm not wild about the turning radius. It takes a few tries to get it right in the parking lot if the whole week I've been driving my Civic, Shadow, or my wife's Neon...
-
Im sure someone mentioned it, but... the dash cracks. Its like written in stone somewhere at the GM headquarters. If you have one of these, thou shalt have a cracked dash. You know, at one point or another. I have replaced the dash before in one that i sold but i have never even seen one that did not have a cracked dash. Perfect example of the sheer magnitude of this flaw - My next door neighbor's dad bought one of these trucks brand new and garage kept it. He was one of those people that takes very good care of his vehicles, almost to a fault. AND, he worked nights so the truck saw much less daylight than most all others. Not to mention they had covered parking there. Guess what he had? Several large dash cracks. :-\ It must be just cheap materials because cavaliers are the same way.
But the other day i was looking back at some of my dad and grandad's pics of these old trucks, (which they bought new) and i thought... man i wish my truck was in that good of shape. ;D
-
Gee lets see, I hate trying to work under the dash even if you take the seat out there is that stupid hump in the floor its just a pain to get under compfortably.
I hate the turning radius also mine really stinks.
The poor way the body lines fit. It takes so much work to try to get them perfect. My truck has all GM parts and it was still a pain I find things that don't look right all the time drives me nuts.
-
As you may have guessed, my only real complaint is the engine is too physically difficult to work on in the engine bay----the engine bay is too large which makes things difficult to reach. Of course most pickup trucks probably have this problem.
i have some interesting solutions which i'll get into as soon as my other problem is taken care of. And not the simplex idea either.
-
The only thing I HATE is that i don't have enough money to have the truck like i would like to !!! ;)
-
Having owned two of these things (first was an 81 GMC Jimmy 2wd, stock 305 2bbl, first ever vehicle, 1991-1993) and now my shorty, here's what I really do not like:
- corrossion-catching cab corners and rear fenders, behind the tires
- poorly fitting body panels
- the turning radius. What is UP with this??? Probably my biggest peeve. I've had longer vehicles turn much sharper. I could have sworn my Jimmy turned better, but it was shorter so yeah it probably did.
- never-ending wind noise. Biggest peeve #2.
- bad instrument lighting
- lack of cab depth and no extended cab ever from the factory. Sometimes it's hard to believe this is a full-size truck.
- crooked beds that develop over time. I've replaced my body bushings and I think my one side is still about 1/4" out.
-
The turning radius can be optimized. Many times it's just improper alignment angles.
first was an 81 GMC Jimmy 2wd
pix please! lol
-
My 81 k20 can do your normal 3-point turn and my 85 1500 can do the same turn in like 5 points. lol

Yeah I gotta get them scanned. The pics are polaroids from 1992! lol It was a sweet high school ride though with the removable top and back seat. Posi diff (not like the 305 would turn the tires anyway, but it was handy in the winter), rally's, Sierra Classic, red interior, originally red with white upper but then my mom got me a paint job for my 17th birthday and I had it painted metallic black with GM Slate Grey top. It was sharp. Since I had one of a couple of 2wd Blazer/Jimmy's in town, everybody thought I had a 'lowrider' lol It had these deep aluminum running boards on it too which sort of enhanced the effect. The day after I traded it in for a 1988 Mustang GT, my brother phones and says he wants it lol He ended up finding a 1980 2wd Jimmy in black and silver. Not as nice condition as mine was though.
-
well hurry and scan pix

Really? I think the large bay makes it easier to work on, better than some junky Japanese car where everything's packed together like a can of sardines....

If you have trouble reaching, just crawl right up in there. I got footprints on both inner fenders.

Get one of these

drop it

I have had over a dozen 73-87 chevy trucks and all of them had a problem with leaning on the front passenger side.

Hahaha. This obviously is a controversial subject, of which I am conflicted about myself. I remember when I changed the sparkplugs when I first got my truck, it was the first thing I did really in the engine bay. I remember replacing the cylinder 8 plug and thinking "ok. This is about 4 feet back from the grill, and about 2 feet below the windshield. This has got to be just under 5 feet straight from where i am looking at it. And I'm only just under 6 feet tall..." All and all I'd say it's a mixed blessing. I will say that I much prefer working on my truck where I have to reach for everything than do ANYTHING to my Civic, where everything IS as aptly described as being crammed in like Rosie O Donnell in a wetsuit. Of course, I really don't ever NEED to do anything to the Civic. It's a pretty reliable car. It just doesn't have the benefit of being as bad as the truck, and unfortunately it has more than just the close relation between engine components in common with a can of sardines...the power is pretty comparable too :D
That wheel stand is pretty bad ass though. Taking the hood off has some benefit also.

A couple of 2ft extensions are also helpful

I just crawl in the engine bay, but that is easy when you are 5'1", 125 lbs. ;)
-
The turning radius is my peve as well. I had a 94 f150 a few years back, and the wife has an 03 dodge durango currently. Both those vehicles can literally turn in half the radius as my c20. Just nutty.
I prefer the large engine bay. But what I really like is the high stance of the 3/4 ton front end. I'm 6'3" and a little large around the middle, being able to roll right up under the engine bay with plenty of room is sweet.
-
Turning radius issues can be resolved with a 500+ ft/lb engine under the hood. Of course this may cause rear tire wear issues.
-
Dang, I think we picked it apart!!
-
Vent window air leaks is a major headache . Bed wood in the stepside is the other reason U wanna kill yrself sometimes
-
that is a ridiculously long truck choptop... the dash lighting is nearly non-existant that gets annoying. and also if you dont have a dome light like my truck does and all you ahve is the floor light and you drop something the floor light only lights up the passenger side not the driver side. although i fixed that in mine and added 2 more lights its still annoying. that bolt for the door hinges how its up underneath the dash. thats annoying to take that one out.
as for dash cracks my dump truck doesnt have a single crack in the dash and all the parts trucks ive parted out didnt have any cracks in them either. my dads friend is a huge chevy guy and he bought all my uncracked pads from me and said in his 30 years of loving chevies and such he came across 2 dashes in good shape cause it was when the trucks were new. me in the year ive been into these trucks i got 4. he says im very lucky to have found so many.
-
Lol, its not as long as it looks. Its actually the stock frame
-
i didnt notice the 6ft bed either ::)
-
Putting gas in these truck can be a PIA, especially on a fleetside, the venting flat sucks on the shortbed. I'm suprised no one has said this one. It is my only really big pet peeve of the 73 - 87 GM Truck.

but what i like is that thay are antiques that desdeserves good respect and thay are hard to get stuck but what gets my goat is that mr. gmc hid that problem for so long.
-
That is NOT a problem it is a joke. If you look at the sequence between 7 and 8 seconds and 19 seconds you will see a flash INSIDE the cab BEFORE the impact. It was rigged all of them were.
The wreck that started this whole fiasco was a truck that was hit on a railroad track, a train impacted it with the teenage driver (which was killed instantly on impact) and the train was trying to stop. Anything hit by a locomotive will have the tanks burst, add that to the sparks from the wheels trying to stop and you are going to have a fire. If I remember the truck was drug over 100 yards after the impact. You could be in a Volvo and catch fire in this situation....
-
I honestly dont see a problem, the top view of the impact you can see the flash. The only problem I have with the sidesaddle is mine keeps on rubbing against this junky super speedbump they put ouside my bank and most the time its to busy for me to hit it on an angle. Guess its time for air-bags
-
but what gets my goat is that mr. gmc hid that problem for so long.
::)
-
I didn't realize I was driving around in something that couldn't withstand being T-boned by a locomotive. Time to look for something new. :P

i did a lot of work no this, and i will post my work soon, (senior project total over 32 hours) so can say it is non-bias, as SAE person i can say it very annoying that you doubt me, from Police reports ( in two states ID and UT over 50 tuck fatallys and no lorrys or trains) to seeing that type of cab impact the takes vary safe if the truck is made rite but is type of engineering is not! and National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing proofed that you walk a way from the crash!

Maybe you should spend more time working on your grammar skills instead of being annoyed that most of us here could care less about a media generated modern day pinto scam.
-
LOL. I agree that the body structure is not up to par with modern cars and trucks in terms of crash safety. But I think that is just common knowledge and widely accepted. Most American cars up until the most recent models are not particularly safe. But they're still fun to modify and drive, so carpe diem baby. May we all go out in a firey blaze with a smile on our face.

I doubt you because you can't even spell "doubt". What the Crap is a "tuck fatally" Are they after market?
-
a "tuck fatally" is people died in it

The seats SUCK
On the pre 73 models the seats would extend to within an inch of the door panel
On the 73-up models the seat is too far away, the seat edge always sags.
The tranny crossmember is a pile of garbage on models with a Cat
I like the pre 73 rear suspension setup on the 2wd models
Long trailing arms with coil springs
Who ever designed the power steering/ AC brackets should be executed (non serpentine)
The same guy was probably responsible for the spare tire bracket/hanger/whatever the heck you want to call it.
Why do the firewalls always rust out?
We had a 73, that the seat did not fold forward. Everytime time you wanted to get something out from behind the seat, you had to move the seat forward. On this same 73 there was an extra bolt at the top center of the bellhousing, that was a royal pain to get to.
In the 73 the cab lighting sucked, there was a tiny bulb under the dash
My 82 had the same thing
What the heck was GM thinking?
-
I hate the fact that despite all the irretations it brings, you still can't stop enjoying a ride or loving the looks. ;)

So true.

Definitely a "love hate" relationship!
-
How about the paint/clearcoat on the early 80s? Both my 82 swb i had and my 82 k5 have isues with the paint and clearcoat peeling. Still great trucks!
-

Some people made out on that deal. I had an 88 jimmy that I bought dirt cheap in 91 because the paint was a mess on it.
In 92 GM painted it for free. The truck looked great so I sold it for good $$.
GM never officially called the paint issue a recall because it was not a safety issue. There was a quick story about it on the 6:00 PM news one night so the next day I went to the dealer and they agreed to paint it.
-
I'm back!! ;D
worst thing for me is the bodges that have been done over the years and putting them right before I can carry on. And the fact I cant get cheap parts over here without paying monsterous import duties :(
-
How about the converted gas to diesel 350 engine. I never had one of these engines but I have friends that had them and they got good fuel economy but were garbage in terms of reliability. However, I have the newer 6.2L diesel engine and it's better but notorious for cracked blocks and cracked heads. And it was pathetic that they put this engine in front of a weak 700R4 transmission. The original 700R4 on my Suburban went with a loud bang and it broke the case. I ended up putting a 1990 model 700R4 and so far, it has held up.
-
mine would be the seats and the FULL TIME 4X4 drives me nuts. other then that i love mine K10
-
they make a part time kit for the np203...easy to install and improves fuel economy slightly. Not to mention less wear and tear.
-
Someone backed into my bumper the other night, busted their taillight up, but no damage to my bumper. It was on the outside of the bumper bracket, so it should have bent. No new truck would have had the same results.
-
yeah i have been looking at different conversion kits for it im only 16 and dont have the money yet :( still not sure if i dont want to put a different t case in it. yeh i love have strong these trucks are built!!
-
i dont like how expensive parts are, but thats pretty much how it is for most cars in general
-
I hate the fact that GM has brought back the Camaro with a "look" of the past and did NOT do that to the truck line, making them look like these trucks...
I Hate that GM stopped making these trucks....
-
idk, but remember when they tryed to bring back the old retro style with the ssr? (personally i hated it) so i cant imagine how bad they would ruin the square body if you let them design it IMO. but you never know, it might be kind of cool.
-
The factory service manual is really less than ideal.
The steering wheel I can turn 1/4 turn and nothing happens.
The gas mileage of my 454. :(
-
Umm.... Ummm... Umm... Oh yeah the factory radio mounts are a pita. Other than that I can't think of anything
-
I got 1... the u-bolt bracket when swapping steering columns engine side.
-
The location of the oil pressure sending unit. It wouldn't have killed them to add an inch of wire to the flat connector harness at the base of the steering column either. Most of the ones I have seen are kinked and the insulation on the wires is cracked. I had to splice mine when I replaced the column. Also the plastic ductwork in the dash turns to warped garbage over time, and the accuracy of the gauges was never anything special.
What else...
the glove box lock cylinder falls apart
the headlight adjusters strip out and then just break
the rubber fuel hoses at the tank sending unit and at the fuel pump are fun to reach
they should have added AT LEAST another 40 feet of vacuum line under the hood, to really make it appear as if there's a giant squid wrestling with bagpipes in there.
-
Lack of any rust prevention measures.
Also, I wish they would have cast the block so you could have dual frost plug heaters! My 350 has only one location: Driver's side, rear plug. In Alaska you need 2 and that will make your engine start first time, everytime. lol
Rusty
-
I got 1... the u-bolt bracket when swapping steering columns engine side.
Uh oh? What happened?
-
I got 1... the u-bolt bracket when swapping steering columns engine side.
Uh oh? What happened?
Nothing except that one is a real bugger to get off without the needed 15MM short swivel which is on my to buy list. Didn't help matters the aftermarket AC hoses were in the way. I just put a tilt wheel column in the truck... Can't wait to see how difficult it is going to be with the hydro-boost on my C30 when I put the tilt in that one...
-
I HATE that my body bushings are crushed and my body sags. Its so uuuugly. Also, how fast they go(risk of tickets), and that 2 of the plug wires tend to melt with headers. And there are no spindle lift kits for 2wds. Thats about it.
-
Why not just get a 4wd?
-
I would loooove a 4wd. But, money limits me to what I have now. but im looking to get either a jeep, or my great uncle has a 79 k20, lifted, 383, winch bunper on the front and a custom bumper on the back. He said hed sell me just the truck with everything but the engine for 1000 or the truck with engone for 4000. Once I turn 18 im going to get a pretty penny coming my way from a lawsuit in 3rd grade because a kid broke my nose and the school did nothing about it. And im going to be saving until then. Just takes time and money, I guess.

hurry up and turn 18 haha. that engine is 3000?

Well, he just wants the truck gone so hes willing to part with it for 1000. But he wants the engine for a future project. So its probably 2500 for the engine and 500 to persuade him to let it go. Haha. My dad said hes got quite a chuck of change in that motor. I might be able to talk him down to like 3500 but from what my dad aaid, hes pretty firm on price. Although he asked my dad what hes got around the house to trade and my dad said he could trade his plasma torch and his big 220 welder that he got from his old work when it closed. So maybe those plus 2000? Idk. I can only hope.

they should have added AT LEAST another 40 feet of vacuum line under the hood, to really make it appear as if there's a giant squid wrestling with bagpipes in there.
Now THAT is a description even I wouldn't have thought of! Grim, that's a dandy! Maybe wrapping a couple more feet of heater hose under there would add to the fun ::)
Oh...but don't EVEN think about making the washer fluid hoses any longer :o

Another poor design concerning the sbc is the distributor being in the rear of the engine just where all the water sitting on top of the hood drains onto when opening the hood. The engine then won't start so you have to open up the distributor and dry it out. Now that my Suburban has a Cummins, it start every time.

Maybe those and 2k yer dads way, welders and plasmas aint cheap!

It was his idea! Theyve been sitting in a storage shed in our backyard for 2 and a half years and havent been touched once. The construction company he worked for for 10 years closed the doors on them with no notice. So he "acquired" a 220 welder and a plasma torch. And an oxy acetylene torch. And 2 110 welders. And a tool box full of DeWalt drills and tools. But that never happened. *cough cough*. So he said he would love to get that truck for me from his uncle and he would talk to him about trading the welder and torch for it.

I got $100 for the plasma and welder...

Haha. Sorry, but the reason theyve been sitting in a shed out back is because he's paranoid to sell them because he doesnt want his old boss to know where they went. He said his boss is that messed up in the head that he will search all over for these things. My dad considers all of the tools as "his last paycheck". The only reason hes willing to give em to his uncle is because he knows him.
