hey guys, Im getting closer to having the entire interior completed. my tunes sound great, but Im going to need a sub behind the seat. I saw a guy on this forum with a neat fiberglass behind-the-seat-thingy but it had 3 12's in it.
For my cab maybe this is too much. but I do need something. can I get away with just one 10" in there? my budget is about 500 for sub and amp.. have any of you guys put one under the seat successfully? maybe theres enough room at the dip in the middle for a shallow 8" or something to warm things up a bit?
thanks for your thoughts on this,\
Pete

You could put one in the center console if you have buckets but one shallow one would sound like garb to me. Some people like the under seat ones. I would run two 10" subs
-
ok cool, thanks for your input. If under the seat is out for sound-quality, I understand.
2x 10"s sounds like it might be over-brutal.. Im kinda old :) does the seat kill it that much?
what I need is to get a center console with the sub in it... I currently employ the bench seating so my kids can drive with me.
Man, the Brewers are totally owning the Reds right now... 9-0 in the top of the second..ouch.
-
Why not run full range truck boxes if you aren't looking for a mad thumper? Add some kick panel speakers and some decent dash speakers and rock n roll.
-
i have one 10" behind my seat, with a truck sub box fits behind the seat fine
-
i also have a single 10" sub in a truck box and it sounds pretty good to me
-
Ive got two Sony Expolde 12's in yellers truck that I modified a truck box for, but it is tight. Fortunately, I can put a big 12" or 15" box in my trucks ;D Sorry, just had to rub it in a little.
-
thanks for all the replies. I already have the memphis audio 6.5 coax in the kicks and 3.5 coax in the dash.
I think thatsingle 10" idea might be the way to go for me.
has anyone tried the bass tube-type subs with any luck, or are they poo-poo?
-
you could easily fit 2 or 3 of these behind your seat http://www.edaudio.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=21_27&products_id=28 it's a 6.5" woofer handles around 200 rms comes with d2 or d4 voice coils and not all that expensive....if ya want i have a set of vented t-line box plans for 2 of them i can send ya
-
I have 2 12inch subs behind my seat. and its a regular cab. it is a tight fit tho
-
oooh awesome looking small subs. I would be interested in that box plan if you would be so kind. you can email it if you like to treepete@gmail.com if you have time, thanks.
I looked around at Best Buy and they didnt have the behind-the-seat box in stock, so maybe I can make them. I have all the tools for that etc.
I guess Ill need help with the math when I get to that point.
thanks for your help guys.

I did this to a couple different c10s when I had New Vision MotorSports Inc up and running.
Some ideas to try out....
-Mid 70s standard cab, bench seat, tall guy wanted all the room that I could give him. I picked up his bench from the upholstery shop and did some fab work on it before they recovered it. I gutted the CENTER of the backrest and molded a box for a 12" sub and put a backplate on the passenger side to mount the amp. Ran the wires before it got covered so most of it was hidden and put the changer in the dip in the floor.
-Early 80's c10, standard cab, bench seat. The guy gave me permission to get creative (friend of a friend). I put both amps on the back of the seat, a single 10 in the dip and a Volcano vibrator under driver and passenger with Clarion in the dash. Sounded bigger than what it was.
-93 standard cab Z71, bench seat, big guy that wanted as much room and sound as possible. I sourced a 60/40 split out of an extended cab, mounted the amp on the back of his seat (40) and built a box for 2 solos (square subs) to put behind the 60 and vented under the seat towards the front of the cab. I found a very nice below the bed rail diamond plate tool box at TSC to store all of the tools and misc stuff he had layin around the truck.
I did more of 'em but they were just standard truck boxes with nothing fancy.
-
I was running a pair of MTX 10 subs behind a bench seat ion a box with i think 2 inch tweeters or somethign i dont recall right now with the factory box and i had plenty of room. on my build im doin right now im stuffin 2 12s behind my bucket seats just cause i have the subs laying around.
-
I have 2 of these and a memphis 500d amp sounds really good and does not take up much room at all it designed for small air space so little box works fine

Probably buy em cheaper than you can make it.
-
^ acttually you could make a box for cheaper then 50 bucks if ya go to the right place.....around here you can buy a 4x8 sheet of particle board for 20$ and for the box plans i have for the subs i listed above you wont use a whole sheet

Seriously? Particle board? :o I didn't think anyone over the age of 16 has done that since the mid 90s.
You could atleast use MDF.... or just buy an aftermarket.
-
well man sorry it's not up to your standards....but particale board works just as well the only time i see ppl useing mdf is for sound off's and bass race's for striaght spl.
-
Not lookin to cause trouble by any of this, just giving decent advise on something I am well practiced in. Particle board is not just as good nor will it ever be. If it was, you'd see it in anything other than the cheapest of Walmart reject boxes. There is no "sound quality" to be had and they are about the worst thing to attempt to properly seal. That part gets under my skin just as much as a body guy seeing newspapers and towels jammed in a cab corner covered with bondo... it's just not right. MDF is not that much more and you'd be doin it RIGHT the first time. Now, if your "hardcore" sound guys are just now using MDF, they aren't real sound guys. Let them know there is such a thing as HDF that has been on the market for a while.
Anyone that will stick to thier particle board box has never enjoyed a really good sounding system.
-
i've used mdf for all my speaker boxes i've experimented with in my truck. i've had 4 10" subs, 1 15", and also tried 1 15" and 2 10"s all in the same overall enclosure. the best overall sound came from the single 15. the 15 can be seen in the thread 15 inch sub in a reg cab. i think it links to my old website in my old truck, but it should still be there. anyways, there are lots of things that can be done to make what you want work. the easiest is to put your seat where you want it positioned for driving, then lay it forward, take a measurement at the bottom, and then a measurement at the top once the seat it layed back. then you will have your overall shape of the sides. then you just make the top back and bottom, and design the front how you would for whatever subs you are putting in.
one note though, i had problems with the sub causing the back of the seat's rubber to shake alot and make alot of noise. i had to butcher the seat to make it quiet, little did i know it can be sewn tight by upholstry shops. anyways, alot is possible just by making those few measurements.
-
thx guys..thanks short chevy .. i think ill startwith a simple box and some mesurements, then ill make the specs questions for you guys. thanks again,
PEte

I'm thinking about building a couple of small boxes and trying to make them look like they are factory -- is there any point in putting sound deadener inside the box? I'm talking about the stick-on deadener not the fluffy filler stuff.
Have any of you ever used or heard those 6.5" subs as shown in the above link?
-
Pre-fab full-range truck boxes 99% of the time sound like total poo. They are just bonk-boxes. No low-end to them at all. Buying a pre-made truck box though isn't such a bad thing as long as you can get 1 cu. ft. or so air in it for a 10. Yes, MDF is much better than particle board but a mass-produced particle board box is going to be better built than somebody trying to do it in a garage for the 1st time.
Anyway, 1 10" behind the seat is going to do you just fine. When I had my bench seat, I built a box for an 8 to sit on my tranny hump. If was ported and fired forward. Sounded really good actually but was bulky. I also had Aura Bass Shakers under my bench seat for a time, running with the 7" woofers I have in my kick panels. It wasn't bad but a genuine sub is better.
Four of the 6.5" or 7" 'subs' might not be all that bad either. It's all about cone area and cone movement (excursion or Xmax). 3 6.5's actually have more cone area than 1 10......

My specialty :)
Box, make a custom one with MDF. MDF is the standard material for box building because it is cheap and dense.
Sub. Stereo Integrity Magnum V4 or BM 12" BM has a 3.5" mounting depth! If you want to get crazy, get some Sundown Audio 8" subs and run like 4.
Amp. Small and powerful. Digital Designs SS1. Fits in a pizza breadstick box and puts out 1000 watts rms @ 1 ohm. There ya go.

cheap huh...how much are you paying for a 4x8 sheet? cuz around my area you have to order it and a sheet would cost around 45-50 bucks
