Title: Diference in tailgates?

I have decided to replace my tailgate. I think the one I have now is from an 87 and I want the same style for a replacement, but without the lettering. Some of the online suppliers show different tailgates for various years. I figured 73-80 and 81-91 would be different from each other. But some suppliers list 73-75, 76-80, 81-86, and 87-91. Some also list '1st design' , 2nd design etc. I'd like to know how they all break down.

I know the styling changed in 81 but was wondering about any mechanical changes.

I looked at the ones on this site and both the 73-80 and the 81-91 non lettered ones look like the same photo. The one in the photos is the style I like and I think it would be the 81-91 style. I assume if I ask for one for an 87 I should be ok, but I just want to make sure. I actually found a decent used one for an 86 and I want to make sure it will fit before I buy it.
