Thanks man! Im still not done but getting there...never knew a mailbox would take so long to do I spent 2 hours drawing and taping it lol
-
Interesting job, before i saw any of the pictures and only read that you mentioned flammes i though a different color scheme on it and something that has been done before, but once i saw the pictures and saw your design its different and cool. congrats. 8)

I hope you wait til after the graduation mail box bashing. That is a ritual around our parts, a shame but it happens.
-
Yea I hope nothing like that happens but I really need to finish it up this weekend because im pretty sure the mail lady is pissed at me because mail box been down since Wedensday night lol

Reinforce your post, buy another mailbox, fill it solid with concrete, and put it up for graduation mail box bashing day.
-
Sounds like you have had a couple mailbox bashings yourself...but good idea I THINK I live where no one would do that so for now just gonna think its not going to get smashed
-
That looks good. Last year I painted flames on Kelly's toilet seat. They turned out pretty good. I know what you mean by a lot of work on such a small project.
-
Yea I was thinking if this turns out good I may try to do the toilet seat in the shop and call it the "hot pot" lol I saw in on a photo contest one time it was pretty cool

A guy not to far from me got charged for having his mail box reinforced with a 1"x1" box tube cage. A kid swatted it with a ball bat from a moving truck, broke his arm in three places. The cops charged the owner of the mail box with reckless endangerment!!!

That's ridiculous. Anytime I hear something like that it really boils my blood. I really think that it should work so that at the very moment someone is breaking the law, they have forfeited any rights they may have. Their rights resume afterwards, but at the moment the crime is being committed all bets are off. Common sense, right? This way if some punk vandal breaks his arm in process of committing vandalism, that's the breaks (so to speak). I don't see how justice could be any swifter.

With my property, I should be able to do whatever I wish. New England Democrats! If I was a cop (oh yeah, I am ;D) I'd say, "that's what you get for being a delinguent" and make the kid go the house and apologize for being a nemisis --while wearing his cast of course.
You can't even protect your own property anymore. What has Amerika come to?
I'd like to see what the kid's parents said when he told them how he broke his arm.
Nice mailbox by the way

You may as well put up one of these on it.

My mailbox has been hit 3 times and blown up once. I keep bringing out the hammer and dollies. One time I had to tac on it with the welder. On the positive side when they blew it up it actually straightened out some of the previous damage before the door blew open.
-
That looks good man, a lot better than regular old mailbox. And now when you give someone directions to your house, they'll know for sure if they found the right place.
Those brick mailboxes dont have any problems from baseball bats.
-
I want to make a mailbox on a thick flexible spring so when someone whacks it, it'll lay down and bounce back up ;D
-
our mailbox post is the rearend out of my dads old truck...the actual box finally rotted apart and my dad put a regular box on there ill see if i can find a pic of the old mailbox and post before we gave in to the norm.
-
Thanks guys...I finally got it put up and completed yesterday but now yall got me wanting to take it down and just leave it in the shop lol
-
Just put a 2" diameter pipe running the heigth of your mail box post upwards so that the top of the pipe is even with the top of the mailbox--on the flag side of the mailbox, fill it in with concrete. Anyone with a bat coming down the highway hitting your mailbox will hit the pipe and the bat will bounce back and hit them--thus protecting your mailbox. Oh, paint the pipe part protuding upwards alongside the mailbox the same color as the mailbox so it is camoflauged. ;D

We had a guy several years ago put a 6 inch steel post in the ground about 4 ft, and filled it with concrete because he was tired of replacing his mailbox every other weekend. Well, as predicted, the youngsters tried to plow his mailbox and basically got stopped dead in their tracks. Next thing you know, he was being sued because it was considered excessive and hazardous. And, since it was on the right away of his property, he couldnt even claim trespassing. The same Barnie Fife Sherriff that told him for weeks that if they couldnt catch the kids doing it, then they couldnt do anything about it, was the one who told him he was in the wrong for trying to fix his mailbox from being destroyed, and let the kids go. I think one was his son, but no names were written down coincedentally. Got to be careful, if it hurts someone, you may be liable, tho I dont think you should be. By the way, you have to drive about 20 ft off of the main road to hit any of the mailboxes on that road, and the kids "accidentally" hit the 5 boxes before his house. I dont think so.
-
Yea I dont think that was a accident. But hopefully noone will hit my mailbox we have never had anything like that around here they just put chickens in the school with cooking oil and stupid stuff like that. But my graduation year someone hung a bear from the top of the school with principal's face on it lol our mascot is a bear it was pretty funny.

You can legally get away with it in most states if you make it obvious that it is reinforced. If steel bars are obvious, you are set.

It's not up to the local police whether or not to prosecute....they should've called the Postmaster General, for it is a FEDERAL crime to tamper with mailboxes.

the mailbox my dad made at our old house was a piece of 6 inch PVC pipe buried 4 feet down and set in concrete, then a bunch of rebar in the pipe and then the pipe filled up to the top with concrete. Then he cut it to the height he wanted and put a 90* elbow on it and a foot or so for the box to sit on. Then we had a mailbox and a paper box inside the pipe. While this didn't protect the actual mailbox, our problem was kids running the whole thing over with their cars. They hit that thing one day and it's funny, they wre gone but their car was still there in the morning.... We leaned it back up and put more concrete in the hole around it and it's still there now.
