Title: Internal or Externally Balanced?
Post by: 81Cheyenne on May 25, 2009, 01:15:42 pm
I bought a 5.7 Vortec crate motor (1 piece RMS). It didn't come with the harmonic balancer or flexplate. The paperwork states that the engine is a 96-97 model. My Chevy Parts INterchange Manual states that all 86 and later 5.7's are external balance yet when I do a parts search I turn up mostly internally balanced balancers and flexplates. So which is correct? Is there any way that I can tell by looking at the crank?

the balancer is neutral balanced
the flexpate or flywheel has a counterweight

It's external balance.
