Title: 84 grill and bezel paint type and correct color
Post by: Gregor on June 20, 2009, 03:31:05 pm
What is the correct color of paint so I can restore my 84 grill and bezels? What type of paint and or primer and where can I find such items. Back in the late 1980s Eastwood had a silver trim paint that was close to being correct but all they have now is a textured paint. This time I just want to restore what is there, in these financial times I just can't afford to replace everything like when I was younger.

Just find a close match. They weren't painted so I wouldn't worry about it being dead on original since it won't be.

So your saying the grill itself isn't painted? I know the bezels have a coating but couldn't say about the grill. I thought it would come to just painting it as close as possible. Thanks for the reply :)

My 84 Silverado had a 4 headlight system with a medium grey finish. It was not painted it was the color of the plastic. Check out some of the repro grilles the color match on the one I got from Veng at the time was a dead on match.

Oh crap on it. You've helped me to make up my mind and caused me to accidentally buy a new 84 OEM grill and repro bezels.

lol, You're better off anyway. Is yours a 4 headlight silverado? If so you'll need to transfer over the mouldings and badge.

No, its just a plain C20 custom deluxe heavy duty emissions model. This is my fourth one; I currently have this and an 85 GMC sierra 1500 which I bought brand new. I actually ordered the GMC from the factory with all the options I wanted except dual lights and some nicer interior options but I was young and had a certain budget at the time.  I remember begging the guy for a 350 for it but in 85 you had to get a 3/4 ton for that. Two months later I converted it two Sierra classic/ High sierra interior to get the certain look I wanted and converted it to dual lights. Parts were unbelievably cheap back then. A couple of years later I built a brand new 350 using one of the incredible one piece rear main blocks when they first came out. I am old school and never left that mindset. oops... sorry I got a little excited and carried away.

NOS grill showed up today. GM box, mold numbers are the same but it is black plastic painted silver. I guess there is always an exception to the rule.
