Title: 73-80 fenders on 84 cab?
Post by: ssblu502 on July 03, 2009, 10:47:12 am
Has anyone put the 73-80 fenders on a 81-87 cab? I have seen the opposite conversion. How hard is it?

Thanks,
Tony

I can't tell you much, but you will need the shorter wiper arm shafts from a 73-80.  I think someone also said you need to cover the holes from the 81-87 hood hinges?

although it was already set up slightly when i got it(all parts were there) my cab is a 81, the rest is 79, and the hardest part for me was to get the lines for the doors and gaps all set up correctly, im not that good at it of course, but it took about 3 hours of tweaking to get it looking perfect.

Wiper Stalks are the biggest issue.  CCZ just did this to his truck.  You don't HAVE to cover the holes.

You dont have to cover the hinge opening, but you'll notice water in your cab after a rain.

Water won't get in through the hinge holes. Only way water can get in through the cowl is if there is rust in it.

It will if you take the rubber boot off and you don't have a good seal at the passenger vent. Ask me how I know. If you park uphill all is well, if you park downhill it leaks.

Water can come in through the kick panel. There's actually a bulletin on it.

Some C/K and 1987 R/V models may have water entering into the vehicle through the right and/or left fresh air vents in the kick panels. With the fresh air vent in the open position, water from the hood hinge water deflector may drip into the fresh air vent door and then flow onto the floor of the vehicle.

To repair this condition, a hood hinge water deflector extension can be placed over the existing deflector to direct the flow of water past the fresh air vent door.

To access the hood hinge water deflector, remove the fresh air vent assembly from the kick panel and reach up into the inner fender through the kick panel opening. The triangular shaped hood hinge water deflector can be felt about four inches up inside the opening. The new deflector extension will snap over the existing deflector and be held in place by tabs on the extension as shown in.  shows the hood hinge water deflector with extension attached. A silicone sealer applied to the back side of the extension as shown in will help hold it in position and prevent any rattling noise.

The hood hinge boots were missing off my 81 Jimmy, some one had put a different nose on it before I got it, and left them off! I never had water come into the passenger area??

Well then, there's no excuse for not to fix it now! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the help. I finally made a decision and got the front clip off. I am going to put POR-15 on the 74 radiator support and will post pics this weekend.
