Title: New guy, From B.C Canada, need motor advice
Post by: DakotaSub on July 06, 2009, 10:18:18 pm
Hello my name is Keegan I am 20 and I live in Williams Lake BC. This spring I bought a 1978 k-10 as my first truck to play in the bush with. The truck is originally a 305 with the sm465(which is what I wanted) 205 t-case, dana 44 and a 12 bolt out back. All the drivetrain is original except the motor which is out of an 1980 truck but still a 305. The guy I bought it off said the truck was used a work truck at his horse stable most of its life. So its kinda beat but whatever im using it for fun lol. Good news its virtually rust free, he replaced a lot of the body panels, so that left the truck with 7 different colours haha. Anyway since I bought it I've painted it epoxy primer grey, installed a body lift, bobbed the bed 15 inchs and put 35's on it. Plans are to change the seat, put a stereo in it(got all the stuff), lift the gas tank, new front leafs, shocks, and do some motor work.

The only performance item on the truck right now is longtube headers with poorly built dual 2.5's. I plan on keeping the longtubes but changing the duals to 2.25 with an h-pipe and run cherry bombs my favorite muffler haha. Rebuild the q-jet thats on it and tune it accordingly. Do an ignition tune up, I have a wieand stealth and edelbrock performer intake manifolds I wanna try. But this is where I need help. I understand the compression on any gm V8 during the mid70's to early 90's suck. So that leaves the stock 1980 305 at 8 to 1? So what cam could I upgrade to, the cam has to be changed anyway, I took the vavle covers off and notice a few rockers don't move as much as the others hahaha. I've read good things about the lt1 cam but its a roller cam I believe. What would you recommend? Im looking for some that will work from idle to about 4500-5000rpm. I will eventually changed the motor to a 350 or 400 but thats a few years down the road. Don't really wanna change the heads inless I can find some used 58cc ones. Im just lookin to hop it up a bit.

V8 are new to many, but engines aren't I've rebuilt and built many seadoo and skidoo rotaxs motors when I used to work for my father. Thanks in advance
