Title: Gauge Cluster
Post by: brlarl on July 08, 2009, 07:40:45 pm
Which if any year models had the factory tach in the dash?  I have a 90 Suburban  system converted to my 85 C10 that I would like to run a Factory in dash tach.  I seen one on Youtube.  Thanks

that will work in yours 78-81 1/2 tons.  You need the whole cluster to make it work and the printed curcuit.

Will that printed circuit allow my current gauges work or do I need to completely switch over all my guages to the earlier ones?  THX

It would be MUCH easier if you get the whole cluster.

I have a question on this as well. I have an 85 without the factory tach obviously. But you say I would need the gauge cluster and printed circuit from a 78-81? I have a gauge cluster pack with the printed circuit from my 78 C30 mason dump but it didnt have a tach. Would I be able to use that printed circuit and plug in a factory tach to make it work properly in my 85 or do I need to do some wiring changes and stuff due to the different years?

you need the printed circuit beacause you have to move the fuel gauge which the cluster you have doesn't support.  You can rewire the whole thing but if you want it to be like factory you need the whole cluster.

Ya thats fine, I have a whole closter pack with a printed circuit that I kept from my 78 C30. it doesnt have the factory tach But I am sure I can get one off ebay and then I can just plug that whole cluster into my 85 and it should work fine right?

Off Ebay, if you are lucky and they actually TEST and Prove the Tach works.
As long as the truck is 78-up, the cluster will swap without major issues.  You will STILL need to repin the harness though.

Is there a place I can look up or find the schematic to repin the harness when I get the tach?

in the tech section on the forum.  All wiring harnesses are listed there.

Yeah good luck there. I bought 3 gm tachs on ebay (1 for truck and 2 for camaros) and none of them worked. Of course they were all "as is". I wouldn't buy another one on ebay unless the seller garaunteed the tach to be functional. IIRC it is a couple hundred bucks to get one fixed.

73-75 ones cannot be fixed at all..
When I used to sell these on Ebay they were all tested and working.  It doesnt take 5 minutes to test one.  If it says as-is, read it as None functional.

On ebay, the term "as is" is just a license to sell junk you already know doesnt work without letting on
