hay guys , i had oil leakin from my tire . so i took off the tire and found my axal seal leaking . so i took off the hogs head pan and took out the pin and c clip , and pulled out the axal , the bering had seased ( bad real bad ) it cut a channel in in my axal pretty deep, and now i need a new one my question is what years of gm modles can i get a new axal from iv got an 85 gmc had a stock 6 cyl 4x4 half ton 6 lug with 10 bolts in in the hogs head ?? dose it mater if i get it off drivers or pasengers side ? while iv got the pan off the back id like to figure out what mt raito is how is that done?

Driven divided by brive. It should be stamped on the ring gear. Ex 41:12
L and R are interchangable. Any year of the same axle with the same lug pattern will work.

man you even type with an accent

YA I KNOW LOL

if you don't find a stamp on the rear axle, you can figure your differential gear ratio as follows, raise and support the rear of the truck so both wheels are off of the ground. place a mark on your rear drive shaft, rotate the tire on your drive axle two full turns while counting the revolutions of the drive shaft, divide this number in half. this will give you your gear ratio.
my stock gears were 3.73 in our 85 k10 diesel.
for more info on specific differentials for your rig you can go to Randy's Ring & Pinion. look up info by make model and year.

thanks but im not real bright , ok if you turn the tier twice how did you get 3 :73 shouldent it b 2 :73 ??
-
you can turn the wheel once and count the number of turns the drive line make
or you can turn the wheel twice and divide the result by 2 for a more accurate result.

Since you have it apart you can find the numbers stamped on the ring gear and divide it without having to estimate what the ratio is.
-
if you know or count the number of teeth in the ring gear and pinion gear, then you can go to Randy's Ring & Pinion site
http://ringpinion.com
and use their gear calculator to get your gear ratio.

ok i can do that , now my next question is .....i had a 6 cly in my 4x4 with a 3 speed and granny low ......should i change gears out couse i put a 305 in place of the 6cyl .......its a 85 4x4 long bed

Ya'll are making this MUCH harder than required.
If you have the cover off, roll the ring gear over until you find the tooth count marked on it and divide.
The picture below shows the marking on the ring gear: 15 41 = 2.73
2.56:1 = 41,16
2.73:1 = 41,15
3.07:1 = 43,14
3.08:1 = 40,13
3.08:1 = 37,12
3.31:1 = 43,13
3.36:1 = 37,11
3.42:1 = 41,12
3.55:1 = 39,11
3.73:1 = 41,11
4.10:1 = 41,10
4.11:1 = 37,9

Here's another pic of the numbers. This was on my 3.40 ratio 12 bolt.
