I just finished putting in all new weatherstriping on my 87. But in the box there was something called 'upper door seals'. My truck didn't have these anyplace, but since I shaved the drip rails, I'm thinking that it might be good to add them. Question is this...were these every used on a 73-87? and if so, where?
-
Here's the best pic I have. Look on the door itself above the windows.

If I remember right that seal came on silverados only for 79-80( or higher)?
-
Higher trim levels had them. I noticed many models having them other than silverado. I've seen them only on power window doors though.
-
I've got a Silverado with power windows and I don't have them.
-
my 73 had them, without power windows. my new to me doors dont have them.
-
Another mystery I guess... I've never seen one before 79 that had them.
-
this peaked my interest, not to say ive been looking for this, but ive never seen that before. Does it help sheet water off the roof better at all? im in the process of trying to seal my drip rails so i dont get soaked, but would the upper seal do anything extra than the regular one?
-
My base 73 had those as well.
-
My 75' Silverado had 'em.
-
can anyone get a picture of the front side? the back i've figured out, but not the front and where it bolts into the door.
-
yeah, i am trying to figure this out also. i had bought new weather striping. i am trying to figure out where the mounting holes go. any help would be great.
-
My 73 didn't bolt anywhere, it was glued to the door.
-
If anyone wants pix pm me tomorrow and I'll take pix.
-
I don't have a pic, but on my 87 there was either a button or truss headed screw holding it in place in the front, just watch out because the screw head on the drivers side contacted the cab and made a bare metal spot I had to keep messing with to keep the rust away. If you can do it somehow without using the front screw, id skip em. The PO had installed the seals on my 87 so I've never done it before.

hey vile, i would greatly appreciate some pics.

Just how soft or firm are these Upper Door Seals supposed to be?
Mine is bent down and inward in a lot of areas and is causing the floor on the passenger side to be wet. They aren't in very good shape me thinks. I see that Chris sells some.

Looks like I missed this request from 2009! I have some doors with them still I think and can probably snap a few pix.
-
The outer seal shouldn't be causing water to get into the floor. That would be caused by the lip seal from the cab to door.
Not sure how to describe how soft/firm it should be on the internet, but it should be compliant. If it is original, it is probably hardened.

Ok, the forum isn't letting me post pictures so I'll just ask a queation:
The cab "Lip Seal" and the Upper Door Seal:
Are they hard to install?
Is there a good brand?
Thank you.
-
Ok, it worked.
Here's the "Lip Seal". I thought it was in good condition, maybe not.
What are they supposed to look like new? Mine are quite flexible, not dried out or anything. They have some "Dents"
-
That bottom pic is the cab to door seal and it is hollow in the middle and is quite flexible. Shut a dollar in the door in a few places and see if you can easily pull it out. If so you aren't getting a good seal and the door may need to be adjusted at the latch or otherwise.
I sell Precision. In my opinion it is the best..
-
The "scraper" seals at the bottom of the door windows, is there supposed to be a sealant/glue applied to them or do they just pop in? Mine are new and they don't seem to press against the window very well, and there is a large gap between them and the door frame. >:(
-
They should have clips on them for the door panel and the metal door..
-
Yes.
Which brand do you recommend?
See the gap. Also some kind of green moss or something seems to like these.
-
The green stuff is mold.
Are you talking about the gap between the scraper and the door opening?
-
Yes. In the upper picture, right-center, there is a gap between the scrapper-rubber and door body.
Are my upper door seals supposed to be bent inward or upward flat against the body?
My interior needs work next. I suppose I'll have someone paint the door-jams for me, maybe get new seals for the door, body and windows if I can find OEM-quallity. I am going to restore the vent-windows and have the painter do them do.. or do it myself. New carpet maybe. It would also be cool to get a Safe (like a fireproof handgun safe) (or have one fabricated) that will fit right under my driver-side seat and bolt into the floor.. heaven knows I hate drilling new holes but who knows..
Now I have gone off on a tangent.
-
The green stuff is mold.
How common is that, or did I just get a bad brand?
-
If it sits outside alot not uncommon for mold.
I don't think that is that bad for fit, you could probably bend it some to make it fit better. I think my suburban that has factory stuff (old) is like that on one...) It is late though so....
