Title: Pretend you could have bought a 73-87 when it was new.....
Post by: nucknoel89 on August 05, 2009, 02:23:40 pm
Let's face it, we all love our trucks, but for most of us we got them second hand and didn't choose how they were made.  What if you could have gone back in time and chosen your truck?  What year would you pick?  What features?  Specific model (Silverado, Custom Deluxe, etc.) or package (ie. Street Coupe, 3+3, etc.)?  Try to keep with what was available at the time.  Nothing custom like dropped or shaved or anything like that, just what you could have got from the factory.  For me:
1987 C30 Crew Cab
454 big block
Silverado package
3+3 option
Black

Feel free to go more detailed.

I like this one,

1973 C10 Custom Deluxe, Stepside, Big Block, 4 speed, Manual Steering, powerbrakes and AC. Silver paint.

~or~
1984 C30 Silverado, 3+3, bigblock, 4speed and loaded. Black on Black with tint and alloy wheels, I think they were an option at that point, but not sure.

big block with manual steering?   No thanks.  I wouldn't feel like doing a work out each time I drive.

Instead of all the smog stuff on my 79, I think I'd go for a pre cat, pre EGR, say a '74 with a 350.   Did they have power locks/windows then?  If so, yep, those.  A 4.10 rear with manual 4spd.  Yeah.  4 row radiator.

I guess I only wish my 85 was a 87 with TBI.  Very happy with the Scottsdale package now I have added intermittent wipers and tilt.  My 86 will be exactly what I wish for that when I am done as well, plain jane Custom Deluxe 350-4speed overdrive... PS delete to keep it simple under the hood...

I would either buy an 80 or older Indy Hauler

or

'73 C10 short bed, 454, bucket seats, tach....and maybe even woodgrain siding.  Serious.  :)

Was the Indy Hauler a purely cosmetic package?

1982 Scottsdale K30 4X4 with 454 and 4 speed. I actually did "order" one when I was in the Marines. First aftermarket item I added, SUN VISOR. :P

Don't mention sun visors around Vile....

As for me, 1979 K10 Chevy Sport, Hawaiian Blue - my current project used to be one of these, I imagine it looked pretty BAD when it was new.

Now, I'm thinking sun visors.....don't trucks come with sun visors as a regular part of the interior?  Then, I thought, he must mean Moon Visors.  There is a slight difference there (pardon my sarcasm).  And yes, Vile is not a fan of Moon Visors, but, I am....

In 1976 I ordered a new 1977 Scottsdale short bed fleetside with buckets/console, tilt, gages and factory tach, and automatic transmission (spouse insisted, otherwise it would have been a 4-speed!).  I ordered the radio delete option so I could stick a nice aftermarket 8-track player in there.  Even though it was a Scottsdale, I was able to order the Cheyenne-style trim for the body, along with the molding under the rear window and the narrow tailgate band.  I really liked this truck, but after living with it a while, I realized that I should have ordered it a little differently.  First, I ordered the 305 v8.  I really wanted the 454, but at the time, over the previous couple of years, gasoline prices had doubled and I was concerned that the price of a gallon of gas would continue to climb.  MISTAKE!  The 305 didn't get but about 1 or 2 mpg better than the 454 would have.  I would also have ordered A/C.  Finally, in my desire to install my own stereo, I negelected to order a radio antenna, because the radio delete option included deleting the radio antenna, so I had to find and install an aftermarket antenna.

Now I would like to order a 1978 model short bed fleetside Cheyenne model with buckets/console, 4-speed and a few more of the options from that year.

For useage I would have to order a long wheel base,( I live in the country) 4wd, small block. Air cond, Silverado pkg, 700R4,   tbi, 3.42 or 3.73 gears, I guess it would be like this-

with a black interior. I guess the color wasn't an option in 87 ;D

Yeah you all know my biggest pet peeve as of late is the visor. I just hate that baseball hat look when they already have a really nice looking line there. Anyway I would want a

1973 GMC shortbed stepside with the hurricane or aluminum slot wheel option. I would want black Sierra Grande 454, th400, 3.73 posi

Well lets see so many choices. I would have to have a 91 one ton crewcab big block auto Silverado black charcol gray int. with a matching k5 blazer color not a ton cause i now that wasn't an option and an 85 1/2 ton 4x4 for a toy to play with, Oh wait I have that one. Guess I just need to get a crewcab then.

1) Definitely diesel.  And not the oldsmoboggie either;  The detroit 6.2

2) Anything with quad rectangular headlights

3) The top interior (and exterior?) trim level whatever that was.

Other than that, i'm not too picky.

I wouldn't mind my 73 Cheyenne Super 20.  I saw one when I was a kid and it always stuck in my mind.

Knowing how cheap "frugal" I am, I still be driving something at least 10yrs old.

I wish I could have had a new 73-78 Silverado 3+3 K-30
-Dana 60 Front
-14 Bolt rear
-sb 400ci
-Turbo 400 or SM465
-205
-A/C
-Black on Black

Later would come 6in lift, 35's, headers, 2.5" true duals with 6in shorty cherry bombs, tinted windows, brush guard, chrome dmi rear bumper, stereo system, and I wish if money wasn't a factor a 5.9l 6bt/nv4500/205 conversion.... but only in my dreams lol

A 1980 GMC street coupe C15 fleetside. Would want a 400 or 454 with automatic trans. .373 posi rear, aluminum wheels, cloth seat,
A/C, P/S, cruise, Manual windows & locks, factory tach, tilt column, sliding rear window. Not sure about the color, probably the dark red or maroon combination.

Another choice would be an 80 K15 long fleet with most of the same options. Not sure what trim level.

To be honest, I'd be happy to have any reg cab fleetside that wasn't RUSTY   :)

If I could go back in time I'd take a:
87 GMC shortbed stepside 4x4
350 TBI/700R4/3.73's
Loaded with the High Sierra trim package.

Down the road as parts wore out I would replace the 700R4 with a turbo 350 and when I blew up the 10 bolt I would add 3/4 ton axles.
Add a 4" lift and some 33"x12.50R16.5 BF goodrich all terrains on some American racing slotted rims and I would have my dream truck.

I wonder how many of us would have held on to our fantasy trucks or would we have been to young and beat them to death? I was.
I had an 88 Jimmy back in 91. Blew up the 10 bolt 2 times, had the 700R4 rebuilt 3 times, bent the front axle tube and tweaked the frame jumping it,cracked the rear frame at the shock mount, the list goes on. GM painted it under warranty in 92 so I sold sold it for good $$ and bought a 79 jimmy. The 79 had a 350/350/part time 203/and 10 bolt-14 bolt FF with 4.10's.

That black and gold Gentleman Jim. I may paint my rims gold like that. I may paint my truck like that. Although I would have to install a few upgrades that the truck, being a 70's model, would have never have come with. Like power windows and locks and window tint and all the good stuff.

skunksmash, 77+ trucks did have PW/PL as an option.  The GJ wouldn't, but some 70's did.  :)

I would have bought a 1978 Chevrolet K30, SRW, 454, SM465, NP205, Dana 60, 14 bolt, no A/C, no power windows or locks, red and white.

Then as soon as drove it off the lot I would have true 2.5 inch dual exhaust installed along with a Detroit Locker in the rear.

Assuming i could plunk down $15K in cash, or qualify for financing in 82-87 which i could not either way.   But you did say pretend so......

crewcab with dual wheels
the stock, steel wheels.
6.2 diesel
top trim level---i think this was silverado or grand sierra or something.

4 headlights.  i got to have 4 headlights no matter what.

two tone paint with black on top and silver with red pinstripping.

Other than that,i'm not too picky.

2) i was wondering if anyone did buy a new shortbed and later regretted this and yearned for a longbed?
