I have an '85 silverado and am looking into stepping up the factory 2.73 ratio as well as adding a limited slip differential. I just put 3.90's and a detroit truetrac diff in the '04 sierra, and while the truetrac is very impressive, it was hard on the wallet. What more budget minded options do I have for the older truck? I would really be interested in junkyard options.

If you find a junkyard set that has the right gear and an open diff, you can add a drop in locker for about the same price as a new one but none of the setup cost.
-
Yeah, I just don't want to run a locker in this, as it is a work truck, especially with the 28spline axles. I think I'm just going to keep my eye open for a complete rear with a slip in it.
-
it would be like finding a needle in a haystack to find a locker in a factory axle and for a 10bolt it will still be a locker as gov-locs are the only ones in a 10 bolt from the factory.
-
Really? I assumed there would be a few non gov loc limited slip rears out there with a steeper gear, that I could poach to set mine up.
Something like this:

No 10 bolt came from the factory with a Non gov-loc unless it was an open rearend. The gov-loc IS a limited slip for the 10bolts.

Oh ok, thanks.
