I have read all the posts on this topic but I thought I would ask anyway. My truck has dual exhaust and I am going to put a tool box on it. I have been wondering where I would put a spare such that it looks nice... Then my friend told me to just get AAA...would cover flats and give me piece of mind should anything else go wrong.
Any thoughts on this? pros/cons?
Might get a spare anyway and leave it in the garage.

1) i wouldn't rely soley on AAA, not saying they aren't reliable, but i don't think it's wise to have to rely on someone if you can help easily help yourself.
a) you could put a temporary spare under the hood. or even behind the seat
b) and/or a can of fix-a-flat.
c) the other thing that i think would like nice is a swing out tire carrier that jeeps/blazers have etc.

Definitely get AAA and just leave the spare in the bed. Keep the fix a flat under the seat.

replace bed with a step side therefore have room for a spare on the side.

Or, if the tool box opens from either end, which most do now, put a big U bolt through the side on the bed side of the box and bolt a spare to the tool box. I did something similar to my 16' trailer. I found a big square side U bolt that fit the lug pattern perfectly and rand the U bolt through the metal side and attached the spare on it.
If you use AAA, your truck will have to be towed because they won't have a correct lugged spare with them and I hope you can afford a few hours delay in whatever you might be doing.

go with the tire for sure. if you have a flat your probably on your way some were "since you were driving" and you can change a flat in 5-10 min while AAA like said above will take at least one hour. i like what Sgt said about the spare and tool box but like Chris said you could just have the exhaust routed around the spare

I don't carry one normally like when I'm close to home, but if I go on a trip I throw it in the back under the toolbox and go.

Agreed. They've saved my butt a couple of times but the wait is usually 45 minutes or more. And if you shop smart and use some of the AAA discounts (there's LOTS of them), it almost pays for itself.
Get a spare and route the exhaust around it.
Fix-a-flat will only work on some punctures. It won't cure a sidewall tear.

I carry tire plug kit and a can of fix-a-flat. That way I can fix the puncture air it up and limp it to get more air.
I do have AAA also.
