Title: SF 14 bolt conversion to 5 lug questions
Post by: Dieselfume on August 24, 2009, 02:25:53 am
Been wanting to put larger tires on my 87 C-10, but the current gears (2.73's) as-is are geared a tad too high for the stock 225's. I figure if I go through all the effort of re-gearing, why not just do an axle swap, which keeps the truck apart for a lot less time.

So I've read a bit about the 9.5" SF14 bolt 6 lug mod to 5 lug. Sounds like just the trick since I want to keep the mostly stock look, and keep the stock 15" rally rims. After spotting this idea, I figured why bother swapping in another 10-bolt (particularly if I get any sort of heavy trailer or boat). I've spotted an 85 C-clip 14 bolt locally, but haven't heard back yet if it is an 8 lug or 6 lug. So, a few questions.

Can one convert an 8 lug also? or only the 6 lug version? (I presume only the 6 lug because the 8 lug would have the big 13" brakes, right?)
After modifying the axles to 5 lug, you use 454ss drums, right? Even if it is a 73-87 SF axle?
When modifying the axles, does the center hub diameter need to be turned down from 6 lug axle? (I presume an 8 lug definitely would need to be turned down.)
Driveshaft length. Do I need to shorten the old driveshaft if I swap to a 14 bolt? And will it need a conversion u-joint?
Brake proportioning valve or master cylinder, any changes needed?
And since everything is apart, recommended best brake shoe brand/grade/material?
Thanks!  ;D

ummm wow lol about the breaks it doesn't mater if its a 5 6 or 8 bolt they all can  "not that they do" but can have the same jb6 or 7 brakes. i cant help you about modint the axle seams tho you have it figured out you shouldn't have to change out any of the brake stuff again it depends on what brake style you have on you truck compared to the axle. but I'm not sure about that. i can understand what your wanting to do but cant comprehend it right now maybe cause it so late lol idk.

What you are considering doing here ? changing gears are a less  time and $ about 4-6 hrs by yourself
rear-end change all day with a buddy and then you should really go thru  new used rear axle assy.

I am not sure why you would want to go to a 14B than the covert to 5 lug on a half Ton just for a gear change.
The 10b bolt is more than up to holding the safe amount of load that you would put on a half ton.

It would be easier to find another rearend or regear the one you have.
