While searching for something else, i stumbled upon this: Yes, i am obsessed with pontiac. No, i refuse to believe pontiac is going away. And no, i will never stop loving pontiac. At any rate, i think it's interesting and useful to see what's involved in case anyone was wanting to do this swap.

I bought a 75 chevy parts truck years ago that had a good running pontiac 400 in it.

Well, there you go.

Knew a guy in Brownwood TX that had a olds motor in his chevy 455

My 1980 GMC Sierra 2WD originally had a 305 (2bbl) in it. In the early 90's we dropped a rebuilt 1982 Pontiac 305 (4bbl) in. Still running it today. Is there any real difference between the 1980 GMC 305 and the 1982 Pontiac 305?

Pontiac never made a 305. Perhaps that pontiac had a chevy 305 in it. Pontiac did have a 301 though

Also GMc never made a 305 in 82. They did make a 305, but i don't think you are referring to that engine. Being that you are in canada, i wouldn't blame you for the confusion due to the fact that canadian built(?) cars had to have canadian made engines for a while.
So, to answer the question, no, there is no difference between the "gmc" 305 and the "pontiac" 305 because they are both, in actuality, chevy 305 engines.
