Title: 86 Silverado underhood wiring BBQ
Post by: velojym on August 27, 2009, 09:28:23 pm
Alright... who runs a loom alongside an exhaust manifold?!?!?!

I took the 'new' truck for a highway run tonight, and it ran like a champ, running up to highway speed
without a hiccup. I was reminded of how spoiled I've been with overdrives and my little red Sonoma's
5 speed manual tranny. I think I'll put a 700R4 swap on my wish list for this truck, though it did fine at
the speed limit (70).

When I got home, I smelled something odd, and checked under the hood. There's a black plastic loom
full o' wires running right next to the right exhaust manifold, and it was starting to melt. I think the wires
are still ok, but I'm wondering whether this was a shadetree shortcut or what. I'm thinking that, for now,
I can find some heat-resistant/insulating loom material to protect the wiring for now, until I can take the time
to work on perfecting it.

What say ye, truck gurus?

I used some of that heat-resistant wrap on wires by the starter and whatnot after I installed headers and it's been workin' great for me.

where are the wires going? What are they for?  If they are starter wires, there is usually a metal tube that is attached by a bolt on the bell housing/tranny and keeps the wires from moving around the exhaust manifold. This also has the fusable link wire which is quite important if you wish your truck to run.

It was late last night when I noticed it, so I'll be able to look more closely at it today. I'll be out and about before then, so I'm gonna go ahead and pick up whatever protective material I can find for the loom.
