Title: Motor ready to pop BOOOOO!!!!
Post by: Uno99 on August 28, 2009, 12:42:41 pm
Well the time is near.  I was driving my truck and out of nowhere, I started to here a light knock.  I pulled into a gas station and popped the hood and gave a listen.  When idling and at a 2000-3000rpm rev in park there is no knock.  However when it's under a load and I get up around 2300 she start to knock.  I got it home and yanedk the valve covers off to see if maybe a rocker arm was loose. "WISHFUL THINKING" and everything was just fine. However, I drained the oil and there was a good amount of metal shaving in the oil.  WAH WAH WAAAAH. :o  Looks like i have some work ahead of me.  At least i got a good amount of driving out of it this summer. Man I hate SBO engines.  Maybe now it the time to do it right and drop in a BBC baby!!!

Yepper it a SBO.  The truck was my Uncle's then passed to my dad then me. My uncle did the swap years ago.  The truck was a 5.7 diesel.  Apparantly they used the BOP tranny or "uni-bell" tranny housing on them or SOMETHING LIKE THAT.  So rather than doing a motor and trans swap he just threw in a SBO.  The install is really nice.  Looks as close to factory I think.  People are always thrown off by it.  They look like a dog that just heard a really high pitched noise ;D  However being and Olds motor I knew it would not last long with the way I like to drive.  Guess I should keep the high reving tp my F-body 8)I love to let the LT headers and Super 44's muffler make some noise.  I just dont really know what to do now......my buddy has a nice 383 SBO he is selling out of his wife's Impala (he's going back to the original 327).  However i think he is asking to much.   I've tossed around the idea of a LSX/4l60e swap as well.  If I come buy a wrecked out F-body or Truck i may go that route too....... or a nice crate motor?.......who knows, I have a long Wisconsin fall and winter to figure it out. Wish me luck.

Good for you.  Personally, i would keep it oldsmoboggie powered.  That's what i would do.

2) Please keep a detailed diary of your engine rebuild.

Punch it .068" over and fit it with olds 425 pistons.  ;) You'll increase your compression ratio from 7.55:1 to about 10:1
