Title: Dana 44 Shaft Play question
Post by: Stewedpickles on August 28, 2009, 05:35:55 pm
I'm repacking my wheel bearings and doing general maintenance to my front diff.  It's a D44 unit. I also need to change the seal in the end of the axle tube.  I have the hub down to the spindle with the stub shaft loose in the spindle.  When checking out the axle tube seal I wiggled the axle within the axle tube to see how much play is there and found about 3/32 to 1/8 inch up and down play. I'm referring to up and down play between item 18 and the tube in this exploded view.  I assume 18 is a bearing/race assembly and 19 is a seal since I don't see a separate race in the diagram.  Is this normal?  The other side is still together and it has about 1/16th inch up and down play.  Anyone know what's normal?

That should be fine.
