82 chevy swb - 2wd. All stock gauges.
When get up to 20mph, my speedo starts making a terrible "ticking" noise. This noise gets louder and faster as the rpms and speed increases. I've unhooked the speedo cable...and the noise goes away. I've even replaced the cable. My question is, do the stock speedometers go bad once they've gone around a couple times? or do i just need to remove and lubricate?

Is the odometer counting up?

Yes. odometer is working.

I have a sqeaking noise in my speedo that pops up in the winter. Just part of the charm of owning an older truck. And it tells me my speed without having to take my eyes off the road. ;)

I had the same issue but mine it was noisy all of the time and competing quite well with radio. I took my truck to a speedo shop they remove the cable lubed it and put back in for about $30 and 20 minutes later had no noise or frustration and all I had to do was sit there and read the latest issue of hot rod magazine.
