Title: Why does my truck have two antennas?
Post by: Skunksmash on September 07, 2009, 04:53:05 pm
When you first read this, you probly think that someone must have added the other antenna, but in this case, I don't think so. One is in the exact factory spot you might find on any truck. Right there on top of the passenger side front fender. The whole thing looks like any other factory antenna I've ever seen. The other one is in the windshield. The wires in the middle of the windshield lead right down, and connect to, another antenna cable. And both work perfectly when plugged into the back of my radio. So, what's up with that? Why is there two of them?

I know the 91 crew cab and suburban had the antenna in the fender.  You may have a later model fender on your truck.

Yup, one of the fenders I put on Yellers truck was off of an 88 sub and it has the hole in the fender for the antenna. I doubt both came on the truck tho. What year is your truck again? (I cant keep up)

my 78 had a fender antenna and a windshield antenna but the one on the fender was a after market antenna and the one on the windshield had been cut off

Sorry, it's an 87 truck. But whoever did the adding went ahead and took the time to thread the new antenna wire all the way through and into the cab. Strange. But yall must be right. It was the one in back of the head unit. So my guess is the windshield got broke, and they got one that had that in there from the junkyard or something. Might have to go ahead and delete the fender antenna when I paint it. They both seem to work well.

The antenna was moved to the fender in '88 for the crews, burbans and blazers.
I would say that your right fender was replaced at some point.

If your truck was a radio delete when it was built,it's possible it would not have a windshield antenna. I would think that someone installed a radio and antenna(possibly even the dealer).

It is a 3/4 ton basic work truck with very few options.

Do they still even sell windshields for these trucks that have the antenna embedded in them? If not I probly better leave the fender one and not delete it. Cause you never know what's going to happen to you windshield...
