Title: Simple way to lower my monster truck
Post by: hndakd on September 09, 2009, 08:23:06 am
I have an 86 k10 that i would like to lower a little bit.  Right now its sitting on some sky jacker lift kit and it seems to have some blocks for the body as well.  Needless to say that the thing is lifted like 13 inches.  Im not familiar with leaf setups and I would like to drop it back down a couple of inches so i dont hurt my back getting into it.  I am going to remove the 39" boggers that are on it and replace them with 32" pro comps.

Take a picture of the "blocks" for the body.  It sounds like a body lift, and if it is, you can remove them to drop it down a couple inches (however big the block is).

where are they located?  There seems to be a bunch under the bed where it bolts to the frame, and then some neon green ones where the steering linkage is.

between the cab+bed and frame, they should look like 3" black cylinders. but with you only taking it down 3" and putting 32s on her i think the wheel gap "between the fenders and tires" would look a little big

ok i have seen those, i would like to remove them as well.  Can I just take them out and put the bolt back through.  The shocks say sky jacker on them.  I would like to lower the truck enough so that its not so bad on back getting in and out. I have read about putting 52" springs in the front but that was about it.  I just dont know to much about how this is setup.

edit

If i can lower it about 5" that would be great.  The "wheel gap" wont be as bad/there, and it will make it a heck of alot easier to get in and out.

If you want to lower it 5", remove the lift, sell it and get one that is more along the lines of your needs.

A 6" suspension lift kit, (all spring) is what you want with 35" tires. Remove the body lift and you'll love it. If you wanna run 32" a 4" is plenty of clearance.

If you can, get us some pics so we can evaluate it alot better. It may not be as bad as you think.

Looks like a 6" suspension 3" body lift to me. Just take out the body lift.

cool, i have been looking at the energy suspension replacements.  Im probably gonna go with that one because i have put them on other cars and they work well.  what about the shock mount? fabricate or is there somewhere that makes them?

Yup, I would say a 6 susp, and 3 body as well. Ditch the body lift and the susp lift. Get some stock 52/56" long rears, and put em on the front, that will give you 4" of lift and better ride. In the back get stock rears, and do a shackle flip for 4". You can easily run 35's with that setup, and it will ride like factory....smooth.

i cant find any leafs locally, is the tuff country kit any good?  Also do i need 5, 6, or 7 leafs?  Theres a salvage yard that has 7 and 5 but i dont know if they will work correctly.

started the body lift removal, is there only 12 mounts? my chiltons doesnt specify where they are so im just kinda guessing.  the ones on the bed are easy to see but i dont know about the cab, and the kit only came with 12.  These bolts are a PAIN!!!!
forgot to mention that the truck has a 427 tall deck in it BB. i know that the tuff country is recommended for small blocks

tuff is good sky jacker is better but more i would just go with tuff. you can add leafs to raise a trucks height or remove to lower but your ride will be changed allot. the mounts two for rad support, 4 for cab and 4 for bed

im thinking just for ease and time just leaving what i have on there and taking of the rest of the lift and see where im at.  sux that i cant find any tires for 16.5 in rim.  pro comps seem like they fit the bill, but i got that itch that says what if i get a flat.

If you keep the 6" lift, trim the fenders a bit you can run 37's and there is a guy on pirate4x4 that is selling humvee take offs (90% tread left) that are 37x16.5 for $65 a tire plus shipping.

That is what I am going to run on mine for a while. Gonna get 10 tires and do a 5 tire rotation with a full size spare. Can't beat $650 for 10 tires.

im probably gonna grab some of those, cause they are CHEAP 6 shipped to my door was less than the procomp deal with free shipping.

To add to this thread, i got most of the body lift out.... the bed is done.  The cab is 1/2 way but i ran into a problem.  the brake juice res is about an inch away from the valve cover..... before i remove the last of the body lift.  This just seems just waaay to close.  I dont even think that it will fit when i bring it down.  Do i have to move it or is it supposed to be close like that.  I have a 366 tall deck in the truck.

i kind of hope your talking bout the booster not the reservoir but anyway

granted there not 366 but it shouldn't come close.
have you only removed the front lift, i think that would put the brakes a little closer to the engine since its more of an angle

If its that close with the body lift still in, it make me wonder if they put a spacer under the engine mounts to lift it. Have a look there and see if they did. Heres yellers 468, shouldnt be much difference unless you have tall valve covers.
It will be close to the booster, but not the reservoir.
