Without going into the politics, and waste of C4C :'(.......
While out searching for a '81~'87 Chevy hood ornament for my '77 K-30 restoration project I stumbled onto a 1990 V-1500 Surburban that a local junk yard had just received from the C4C deal. It still had license plates attached to it that are valid until Aug 2010. :o
This rig was rusty on the body, but the important parts for us truck owners was perfect. I was able to secure the purchase of both front fenders, and DR's side front door. Also obtained in the deal was the filler that is 1989~1991 R/V specific that goes in between the grille, and front bumper.
If I can find the spare cash, I intend on going back and buying the other front door, hood, and bumper. All of these parts are in PERFECT rust~dent free condition, and will serve their new owner (me) for many years to come.
Oddly, the salvage yard "threw in" the grille filler since I bought all of the other parts. This is cool since the one I had previously is damaged slightly, and this part has been discontinued by GM. Oh, and BTW, that is the only part that I originally intended to buy off of this Sub. LOL!
Using all GM parts, new, or used is of the utmost importance to me, otherwise I may have gone reproduction on the grille filler.
My oldest son, and I are going back to this salvage yard when he can get time off from work. They have a couple more C4C C/K trucks that need to be "saved" (if only in part ::)) So we are hoping to get for him a bed, and front end sheet metal.
If anyone is needing 1984~1991 parts, now is the time to look through the salvage yards. According to the yard where I was at, they only get to keep these rigs for 180 days, and then it is crush time. :'(
R.I.P. 1990 Surburban 4x4. :'( Your death was not in vain.
BTW, I still don't have a hood ornament. >:(

I just scored a crack free Dash pad and super nice gauge panel for $50.00 ;D ;D

Are you saying that in order to put a 89-91 nose on a pre-89 truck, you have to have this filler piece? When I just bought this setup a couple weeks ago, the guy who owned the parts truck destroyed it while we tried to get the core support out. My 85 filler (valance) won't work or can't be made to work?
-
unrelated, but not- scored tons of 88-98 junk for my CLUNKER off of much much nicer and newer c/k's
-
I scored some headliner trim and a good set of door panels for $18 at the local scrap recycler ;D This truck also had some aftermarket buckets in it that I am thinking of going back to get.

Can't beat those deals ~ Parts are plentiful today but part of the deal was to crush them in short time.
I have heard 90 days ~
but most yards say the program has already failed to keep their end of the deal on said time line so they are gonn stretch it out on selling parts as long as they can @ 120 days or so.
BUT bottom line is that the Government demands these C4C vehicles be crushed in short order.
My yard got in 6 burbans / 3 nice v-6 86 - 87 2wd full size trucks / 4-5 pre 88 work trucks / and a drop dead georgous Black 1986 k-20 4wd 350 4spd 4wd / 6-8 pre 92 Blazers.
Also 15+ later modle Tahoe Yukon Suburbans up to 2002 and a fat hand full of nice xcab 4wd trucks all the way up to 2004. :-X ???
Why some one would clunk a clean black 2004 xcab 4wd stepside is beyond me miles were 200k + but their must have been an additional depreciation write off.
Also 3 Toyota FJ 80's with the High pinion front diff

Can't help avoiding the politics of this program 'cause it sure makes me wonder; What is the point of requiring these 'clunkers' to be crushed in 90/180 days? To keep guys like us from salvaging parts to restore our politically-incorrect vehicles maybe?
Something to think about come next election maybe?
-
i was at one of the many salvage yards around me and noticed the increase in c-10ns and suburbans from 73-91 so i figured it out the c4k i got a rear bumper for $40 and they took it off for me also got sum door pieces for like 5$ waited a while to go back for other pieces i wanted to go back to notice there was a lot of other people looking for parts a lot of of them were gutted and sum were no longer there what a shame to see theme go to a crusher so if you have time to check out a local salvage yard for any part i would suggest you should i found a lot of nice things i wanted to get.

I found this cash for clunkers beauty at the boneyard the other day. At least they were kind enough to set it aside until they could strip it(it's not the pick your own part type of yard). Usually they only save cars that are 2002 and up. All of the older stuff gets crushed right away.
I talked to the loader operator. He didn't know what the motor was but it was an automatic so at the very least it should have a turbo 400/205 set up in it with a Dana 60 front axle.
I was amazed at the amount of 2000 and up suburbans/tahoes/pick ups that were turned in.

Is you search "core support swap" You will see the pics I posted of the 89-91 valance from when KoolerSL2 did his grill swap.
-
Man.....where was this thread when I went to go get that 90 nose?????

Very informative and yes it sure sounds like I need that valence. His is now bent up beyond use so I'll have to source another one. What is it that bolts down to the valence? The core support itself?
-
The valance bolts to the fenders. Those tabs on the 89-91 valance are for the grill.
-
So if my pre-89 valence is used, the grille just sorta flops around at the bottom, eh?
-
Hmmm I never realized teh 89-91 valance was rare. Mine is slightly bent up and I've let sooo many go to the crusher... :-[

I save every one I get.
-
At any point do the body bushing bolts pass through those tabs on the valance? I can't recall but I know taking those bolts out were a major PITA.
-
Through the Valence, no.
-
Great, thanks. Pulling another one from somewhere else shouldn't be a huge deal then.......I hope lol

Went to the junyyard and found a 77 blazer with CLEAN interior and got the low back seats.

Yall are lucky..
I live in Va and I have been looking around places around here for parts for my ride. I have found a few but everybody wants a arm and leg for anything off of them. For example: I found a lund sunvisor on a truck it was in good shape. The owner at the yard told me $125 for just the visor. I had about 3 heart attacks in a row. I kinda politely told him that it was a little steep on the price for me and he was like it dont matter to me whatever dont sell gets scrapped either way. The way I look at it I wont be going back there.
Its really sad that all these nice vehicles that people took for the cash for clunkers deal but nothing we can do about it now...Maybe if we all get together and get the junk license we would be in good shape. hehe
-
The only 73-87(91)'s impacted by the clunker thing were 85-91. SEMA lobbied to get cars eligible for antique tags (25 years +) removed and won, so if it it a pre-85, it wasn't part of the clunker thing.
-
i went to the salvage yard yesterday i swear i was dreaming when i ran across a 86 c-10 with a not cracked blue dash pad i had to get my cousin to take a look to make sure i wasn't seeing things :o. and it was blue to match my truck i couldent pass it up so i took it off and took it up front and then it got better they only charged my 25$ for it ;D.

The valance bolts to the fenders. Those tabs on the 89-91 valance are for the grill.
Can I get a confirmation on this? The tabs on the valance I believe are for the core support and not the grille. I looked at my grille piece the other day and it does not have any provision at the bottom to bolt to anything unless I missed something?
Also, if the 89-91 core support needs those tabs to secure it in place, why does the 88-older core support and grille assembly not need them? Just curious if I can get away with using the one I have or not......
-
I really despise that cash for clunkers program. So many perfectly good vehicles wasted. :'(

Where are you, We have 2 junkyards here in Richmond area that have set prices for everything,
-
Talked to the owner of the salvage yard where I bought my fenders, and door.
He said that they were going to start squishing the C4C trucks any day now.
I believe he said they all had to be gone by the end of January. :'(

I hate that c4c horseshit all a crock in my book.. it was all a big program to help out the auto industry so they wouldnt go out of business. if they would build strong cheap trucks that didnt have all that crap in em that ya dont need you could sell a 4x4 for like 15,000 if not cheaper but all them sensors and electronic comp stuff costs money and its a rip.. bring back a gm goodwrench 350 a muncie sm-465 4 speed 3.73 rearend with a locker a quadrajet card and hei ignition and i would by it i got 2 screws on my arb and jets that replace 900 worth of sensors... thats my .02
