Title: yet another dumb question
Post by: murraygmc on September 29, 2009, 08:42:15 am
as anyone knows my posts i ask alot of questions , this is mainly becouse i dont have 2 many gear head frends, ok  iv got a 305 compleatly stock and would like a littel more kick and a littel lope i plan on having a 4" lift soon and 33/12 50  or posibly 35 12 50 and im not wanting a total street queen but im not planing on mudding it much eather
 question
1) how hard is it to remove / install a cam  ?
2)  i know nothing on where to start looking for the right one
3) can i just put a bigger cam in with out changing any thing elce (Engen parts E.X. pushrods, valves  ect)
4) do you have to remove the engen ? i know it would b easer  but if the raidater was removed and the grill was removed  then there is alot of space there to play with ?

i know geting a 350 is what some people would say but i want to use up the 305 first then yes i will go with a 350

You can do a cam swap without pulling the engine. you'll have to pull the intake, rockers, pushrods, lifters, waterpump, harmonic balancer timing cover, radiator, condenser, you get the idea. replace the timing chain and lifters and if you wanna keep everything bare bones use this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-K1102?part=SUM-K1102&autoview=sku

As you already anticipated most people would consider this a waste of time though.

You can definitely  "Wake up" a 305 but jus slapping a cam in a greasy ole 305 seems hardly worth the effort to me.

This is a how to on the in truck cam install:
http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/cam.htm

A 305 shared the same stroke as a 350.  The amount you would have to bore out of one to make it a 350 (to get the pistons in) would be better spend on a 350 block.
