Title: harmonic balancer??
Post by: nativetexan on October 04, 2009, 10:45:52 pm
Hey just curious... how do I install the harmonic balancer on my 87 small block. It is a oem replacement I picked up from autozone. It is a rebuilt motor so... any advice?

Let me know if you need any more info.

Reverse of the removal.  I'm not sure if AZ rents tools, but they "should" have an installation tool for the balancer.  Presses the balancer onto the crank snout.

I got these directions from SummitRacing.  http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/sum-161350.pdf
I know AutoZone and O'Reilly both rent out tools, but I'm not sure if they have the crank installation tool.  Maybe you could call and check.

Is it typical to heat the new damper up like those Summit instructions recommend to make it go on easier?

I heated mine up in the oven at 200* for 30 minutes and just before I slapped the balancer on the crank I froze the crank-snout with a shot of nitrous.  I slapped it on as far as I could with a 2X4 and hammer.  Then I used the stock bolt to pull it the rest of the way.  Several other guys on the net suggested that the balancer be heated up to slide on easier.
