Title: None of you live in Portland, Oregon, right?!
Post by: jdguthr1986 on October 08, 2009, 07:07:59 pm
Had to make sure because I didn't want anyone snagging this 'fore I get off of work tonight!

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/cto/1410815681.html

I spoke with John, he stated that the truck runs, and that he drove it one hour to its current location. He stated he will take no lower than 500 dollars... I am considering purchasing tonight because the engine looks so clean & I think I may be able to benefit by purchasing it: either by reselling it for a higher price after repairing it, or using it to build my current project truck*

My questions are these:
1) Do you think this truck is a good deal? (However you interpret 'deal')
2) What needs replaced due to the collision? (Assuming the frame is straight?) It seems like just the front clip + bumper.
2) Do you believe that I could turn around and sell this for $1,500.00 after replacing & painting the front clip?
3) In the pictures, is that a stock radiator?

On a side note:
Would it be possible to transplant this engine and transmission into a different truck* with only an engine puller and a socket set?

*1977 Shortbed Stepside with 3/4-ton running gear. (TH350, Dana 44 in front & Dana 60 in rear)

Thank you in advance for your responses!!

I actually am in PDX - you don't want to give me a good price on some wires from it, do you? *grin*
Looks decent, though lacking on details in the ad.

Looks to be a decent deal.  You may need a screw driver or more than a socket set but it doesn't take a lot to pull the engine/trans.  As far as a money maker it would all depend on what trucks go for in your neck of the woods.  Have fun with it.

Lokkju, free if you'll come pull 'em and give me some company! (My beautiful fiancee isn't too into it, hehe)

Ah, okay... I do have a few different screwdrivers as well. But that's about it.

Trucks in my neck of the woods are going for 2,500 for a decent-running & driving one. The completely restored ones go for 7,500. And the junkers? Well, people are begging a thousand bucks for you to hobble off with one.

I'd grab it for $500. Pull the motor for your truck and sell off the rest. I see an easy $2,000 in parts on that truck, but as we have discussed in other threads the value of parts seems to vary depending on location.
As far as pulling the motor with just a socket set, thats about all you would need. Some specialty tools like a flywheel/flexplate wrench and a distributor wrench make the job go smoother, but it can definitely be done without them.
Many years ago I pulled a 350/350 combo out of a 75 Nova to install in my Camaro using nothing but an engine crane,11/16" wrench, 9/16" and 5/8" sockets and a SAWZALL.
I unbolted the 2 motor mount bolts and the tranny mount bolt and cut everything else (the Nova was getting junked).
I cut the hood hinges, driveshaft (kept the yoke in to avoid spills),tranny lines,linkage,rad/heater hoses, electrical, exhaust, you name it,it got cut.
I took my time and used more tools on the Camaro install but I sure had fun hacking up the Nova.

So it can be done! That's awesome!

So... Update: I decided to spend an extra 200 (Talked Erwin down to 700 for this beauty) because I wanted a LWB 4x4 3/4 ton with the more aerodynamic front clip... Here's what I picked up:

What do you guys think?
First thing to go on is my headers and flowmaster 40's this weekend!!! *Excited!!!!**

Oh man I know! God is so faithful, man. He orchestrated this: He knew that was my deepest want and because I'm trying to live to honor Christ he 'fills my cup to overflowing' But I didn't think I would be blessed like this! Check it out:

Bought it yesterday (pics up soon!) after work. I can't believe my eyes! It's completely untouched (only mod is a sterring wheel, but the factory one I got with the truck)... Never been tore into at all (Solid fenders, rockers, floor no rust)!!! It's got *EVERY* available option on an '81. Even the factory tach! AND IT ALL WORKS FLAWLESSLY!! 2-owners! The guy I bought it from was so nice, and had put 90,000 of the 105,000 on the truck, he bought it in Idaho in 1990.

Details: It's the 'Sierra Classic' model (My FAVORITE, I even like saying it... Sierra CLASSIC) and it's got A/C Tilt, CC, PDL, PW, PB, PS, Sliding rear window, tow hooks, the 350 mated to the tougher TH-400 transmission, and the engine is so smooth.

Here's my situation now: I'm young, I'm immature, I'm not wise and I have been blessed with this truck and I don't want to mud it, or ruin it... So I bought a carport for it and It's under that but I want to put it in a garage.. But anyway I had the idea of building up a truck, but I just don't want to turn even one bolt on this truck. it's too perfect... So although I won't be
'restoring' this truck I will enjoy every mile and every memory I make with it. Thank God.

Congrats on the deal.  You seem to have a great head on your shoulders giving credit, and not being ashamed to do so, where credit is due.  Keep "him" # 1 in your life and you won't go wrong.  You now have a VERY nice truck...

Congratulations on your new truck!  I think you got a great deal.  Enjoy it as is for a while, you might find a few things down the road to do to it later to make it "yours".  Glad you got it, hope it works well for you.  By the way, I'm only 30 miles from Portland.

Well thank you, Zieg85.

Thank you, Grover! Yeah, it was an amazing deal because there were people chomping at the bit to get this truck for 1,000 bucks but I didn't even have to pay that! Yeah I've visited Battleground once to buy a '77 Chevy :)

+1 definately a nicer truck

Yeah it is a much nicer truck and it's more aerodynamic because the hood on it kind of slopes down a little bit but my '77 and '80 both didn't have that extra feature!
