Title: fuel pumps (for EFI motors)
Post by: p7387 on October 24, 2009, 09:37:10 am
hey guys:
i have separated this from my prior post on "gas tank replacement"

concerning the fuel pump on a 87 EFI motor. i will need to replace the tank and the brackets on my truck due to severe rust. i have not yet pulled the tank so i do not know what condition i will find the tank and sending unit/pump. given the cost of all the parts this is starting to become a expensive project. common sense dictates that i might as well replace the pump and sending unit along with all related hoses at this time as well. my question--is it better to try and reuse the existing pump/sending unit or replace it all with new aftermarket. i would rather use AC delco parts but they are too expensive, but at the same time i do not want to go through all this work and use cheap aftermarket junk that will break in 12 months. is there any aftermarket stuff that would be comperable in quality to AC. also - am i correct in understanding that the sending unit and pump are two separate items? it seems like the sending unit is more offensive in price.

thanks for your opinions

The pump is housed in the sending unit, you would need to get both and they are expensive.  Generally the sending unit doesn't go bad, but the pump will sometimes.

One is power to the pump, and one is for the gauge.  It grounds to the metal frame of the unit.  I would think there should be a wire fastened to the unit, but mine was rebuilt and there was a wire soldered to it that I grounded on the frame of the truck.
