Title: what should i do?
Post by: screamin86 on October 27, 2009, 12:11:11 pm
Alright well the th350 in my 86 k10 lost all forward gears so i need a replacement or a rebuild. I bought a rebuilt th350 and 203 tc from a friend at work dirt cheap...unfortunately when i pulled it all apart i found that the conversion that was done on mine uses a 6in tailshaft th350 and the th350 that i bought was outa a 78 and the outputshaft is too short. I may be able to pickup a 205 tc from another friend but what all would be involved in the swap and would it work? I need this truck back together but trying to go around a $$$ rebuild at the moment since we are trying to build a house...thanks for the help guys

PICS!  (I'm curious, and it may help identify the setup) What few chevy transfer cases I've seen, have had an adapter instead of a tailshaft.   IIRC the output shaft on my turbo 350 was about 1"  (I don't remember exactly, but it wasn't much)

With just the above info, I'd look at getting old trans rebuilt.  That was you KNOW it will work in your setup.

Correct the output shaft for the th350s that came in these trucks are short and the t-case bolts up with a plate. Mine had a 700r4 originaly and a 208 tc my th350 i have has a 6in output shaft like alot of old gm cars the 2wd trucks had the 9in tailshaft.. Ill try to gey some pictures up tomarrow. My tcase and that trans will bolt together but the output shaft wouldnt reach to turn the tc.ive got a few quotes on a rebuild and more expencive place said 750 other place said up to 650 depending on what needs to be done. Im just really stressed about getting it together before we get snow. Its sitting with a new 350 with the cam breakin done and ready to go but it has no trans in her :(

rebuild it yourself. A clutch press, snap ring pliers, in/lb and ft/lb torque wrenches, and a basic socket set along with a good manual are all you need. Transmissions really aren't that complicated. And a 350 is among the easiest transmissions to rebuild.

Very true.  My original is sitting in the shed waiting for me to do just that.  Time constraints pushed me into a rebuilt unit.

Yeah ive thought about doing that but i dont really have a good place to pull it apart and rebuild it. Ive done motors a few times and there is nothing to it but they dont have all the little pieces

The first th350 I rebuilt, I rebuilt on a piece of plywood on a pair of sawhorses, and I used a spare tire and wheel as the reassembly cradle, I soaked the new clutches in transmission fluid in an old antifreeze jug I rinsed out really well, an cut the bottoms off the quarts of transmission fluid to put the small parts in..it doesn't take much of a work space, as long as everything is clean.

If you don't have the space/time and tools then just get it rebuilt. If you have a spare one to rebuild in your free time and the investment to make in the tools then that's fine and dandy but it takes practice and experience to do it right. You can get around a lot of the special tools by making them your own if you're serious. I believe I posted a few how to's on making some of your own tools cheap if you do a search.
