Title: Speedo cable
Post by: BobDog on October 30, 2009, 03:12:15 pm
My speedo cable is making noise, mostly when it is cold.
When it warms up, it goes away, but I can still hear it slightly.
I bought a new one, but the truck has CC so there is some kind
of junction box (?) where the cable goes fromthe T-case to this box.
Then there is another cable that goes from the box through the firewall
to the speedo. Noone seem to have this part. Any suggestions??
The truck is a 1981 GMC K15, 305, TH350.

I have been looking for the same part.  Fortunately, I have two and have decided to rebuild one of the units.  If I am able to rebuild the unit, then I will post the results.  Your next choice is to roll the dice and find a used one.  Check your vac lines going into the CC as well.

i just picked up a new speedo cable for my  82 with CC at advanced auto.    there are 2,   the lower and upper cables.   the lower cable is much longer than the upper.  advanced said they could have me both by this afternoon, but i just needed the lower.    check around at your local parts stores.

Did any of these trucks come without cruise control? I cant find any stores that carry a one piece speedometer for a automatic K10. My cruise control box (where the upper and lower cables meet up) was trashed and I dont want to spend the money on a new one. I would like to go without it.

the cruise control was an extra option.   there are many models that came without it,  more without CC than with it.

I bypassed mine also .. till I find a working c/c unit . I bought a one piece set for 30 bucks at my parts place . It's a really common part that is used on a ton of models and years . Make sure your parts guy looks it up in a catalog and the should be able to order it . Or try rockauto they have them listed online .

My speedo cable was also making noise when it was cold for the last year and it finally quit this week. How do you know which cable to replace the short or the long. I have CC also.

short cable goes from CC to speedo, long cable goes from transfer case/trans to CC.    take off the short speedo cable at the CC and turn it to see if the speedometer goes up in mph (with truck not running), if it doesnt, replace short one, if it does, replace long one.

my speedo cable was very noisy. i brought it to a speedo shop they pulled the cable out lubed it and reinstalled it in about 20 min for about $25. now it doesn't make a sound. so if yours isn't broken this might be an easy solution for your truck.

Have you looked online ? I just did a quick search and found a lot of them  mind you not all off them are 28" long but they are there I think the shortest is 38" . rock auto is 11.45 for a 41.5" cable .

I'd check to see if u can pick up a universal kit that you can trim to 28" and use your housing .
