Title: spark plug removal
Post by: p7387 on November 03, 2009, 12:41:06 am
hey guys:

87 with a 305 motor-
i would like to change the plugs but some of them look very difficult to get at because of the manifold. any tips or suggestions?

also the plugs look rusty at the base so the other day i sprayed Pb blaster as close to the threads as possible, what is the likelyhood of a potential frozen plug / snap off issue?

thank you

just use the spark plug socket and it will be no problem. and with the plugs freezing its not likely on cast heads more on aluminum heads, imo.

some of the spark plugs may come out, but break at the threaded part leaving it in the spark plug hole.  get a large easy out and use that to take the threaded part.  be careful not to break an easy out. for the hard to reach ones, use an extension or 2.   they are all within reach.

a two inch extension is what i use.  Nothing to it.  Hardest part is finding something to step on to reach the back ones without it sliding from under your feet.
Sometimes, the spark plug is so long the tip goes through the ratchet hole in the socket, and makes it hard to put your ratchet on, so be careful there.  I have a special two inch extention that I gound down the end, so the extension doesnt hit the tip of the spark plug. And take those dang rubber parts off the spark plug socket...i hate those things.

I just sit in the engine bay, just make sure the engine is cool.
