Title: My 80' C10
Post by: overthepond on November 13, 2009, 03:14:38 pm
Hi Guy's..well its been a while since i posted anything up on here since owning the k5,sadly i had to sell it due to my deep pockets becoming shorter but im back with a new truck.
Spotted a clean looking 1980' C10, 350 2wd on autotrader and thought 'yes' i want it.
So we trooped over this morning and have a good look over it.Luckily for us the guy is a sheet metal worker so everything that i thought i'd be welding has already been done to a good standard,he handmade the outer rocker panels and they look stock..engine is a gem running on LPG breathing through a holley 600 and exiting through duals out back.
I'm the 2nd civilian owner as the truck has been on a military base since new when it was brought over to the UK...its good to be back behind the wheel of a chevy.. ;D

Title: 1980' C10 teardown and build up.
Post by: overthepond on January 28, 2010, 12:43:31 pm
Well the snow finally left so i got the chance to start tearing down the c10,i never planned this (we never do) but after running it for a while certain things just niggled at my brain and it did look untidy so i decided to tear it down to the frame and build it back up replacing what ever it needed and putting previous owners hack jobs right along the way.
I like this truck as every nut & bolt is coming off without breaking off so its half the battle won already.First to come off was the front end,but then the snow came down again so work stopped as i dont have anywhere to keep the truck as of yet.Roll on a couple of weeks and work starts again.Went out yesterday and started pulling down the bed and i have to say this truck being nigh on 30 year old is still in nice condition, dented maybe but solid enough to warrant the work... :)

Thanks... ;D

Got some more removed today,(Gonna need a bigger shed)the panel directly behind the cab has seen better days and i think its gonna have to be junked for a better item..its banana shaped and battered to heck.
Also got access to the 2 LPG tanks fitted to the frame, these also are being junked as i'm not a fan of it and i've seen valves peened over on their seat face due to running it...also i need the space where the reserve tank is to fit my alloy tank..never noticed the 12 bolt rear either...must have been asleep when i looked the truck over.. ;D

Finally got some replacement panels through today, would like to have bought them via the site but with Chris not yet shipping overseas... ;) i had to buy from germany of all places.
Quality seems ok for (sherman...made in Taiwan..?) but how they gonna fit, full rocker and extended cab corners..any horror stories.

Set to work on the cab this morning, mostly stripped out and its not as bad as i first thought,so once that was done i set about doing some welding to the hood as the rot had gotten hold of the front leading edge in not just 1 corner but all the way across...finally finished it at 8 tonight, had to remake the support panel for the latch also as it was rotted out...forgot how much i hate welding.. ;D...then i took a closer look at the core support, the last pic, and thanks to my 3 yr old son for playing with the camera dates and making me think im going backward on the project ;D

Motor/tranny removed today...it went without any fuss.
Gonna have to clean 30 years worth of crud from the front end before it goes for blasting... ;D
Looking at the motor today i never noticed the alternator is on the right side if viewed from the front, first chevy i've owned with this setup..?

Without seeing under the tarp, the alternator on the right side would indicate a 1972 or older set up with a short waterpump, at least that is how it was in the states for a pickup truck.

Your probably right.. ;) as the vin states it was originally a '6' cylinder-manual trans, the numbers on the block read,

That is some nice work.  A brand new (looking) 1980 frame--that truck's gonna be the envy of all your friends.  I'm a bit envious myself.  I'll be downright green once you get this thing rolling again. ;D

Just like me then, the use of the unit was a one off...the rest of this truck will be finished on my driveway except the paint that is.
If the weather holds out it'll be done before next winter...lol

Found it under the front of the box on the right side and again under the cab on the same side.

Its that old saying..'too many cooks spoil the broth'...i'm quite happy pottering on alone if the weather holds out,but it is good to get help shifting the bigger stuff around when needed.
And i know exactly where everything is in my organised mess... ;D

Been welding like a mad man lately... ;D
Decided to remove the previous owners self made rockers and cab corners and replace them with the correct panels as they were out of alignment with the door,i also had to remake the gutter as he decided to remove it completely and weld the floor flat to the step...in all i found about 3 inner rockers and 2 outers all self made and just placed on top of one another...WTH.
This guy must have had a few aircon units laying around as the amount of galvanised metal he used was hilarious.
Next job was to tackle the area around the d/s hood bumper as it had all but deteriorated along with the corner of the windshield frame..(later job)...odd that it rotted out on one side only..?
The cab is now starting to feel and look solid again after a few hours work... ;D

A lot of work there!  You've been busy.  If you don't mind, I've got a few questions.  Did you leave out the inner rocker?  I ask because you welded on the rocker panel and then repaired the edge of the floor to meet it.  Seems like that would be difficult if you were connecting it to the inner rocker like factory.  Are you going to weld the rectangular floor patch down to the cab floor support?  That seems like an important part of the structure, but maybe not???  I feel for you on the windshield corner.  That looks tough to repair, but you apparently have some great welding skills.
Title: Re: My 80' C10 (updated)
Post by: overthepond on March 19, 2010, 02:36:38 pm
Good question.. ;D

The inner rocker was a nightmare to look at so it was removed along with the other junk, rather than replace with a stock inner i'm gonna replace with box section as i did on the blazer, sorta like sliders but hidden.
It was a lot of work to get the floor to meet the rocker but it paid off and looks good from below,a few seams to clean up and its ready for seam sealer and paint..

The floor supports are another story, home made so they are going tomorrow and getting replaced with new sections, everything will be welded where it should be...but as you can imagine the phantom welder has been everywhere and the time its taking to remove his handywork and put it right is the killer.... ;D

Windshield corner...tough one to do but i'm persistant (i think).

Well i've decided that if i cant get the complete section that has rotted out on my cab around the lower windshield area the truck is gonna have to go for recycling.
I've looked high and low for a cab that i could cut the section out of but no luck at all,i tried making it but its just too complex of a shape to get right.. :-\
If anyone is swapping a cab out that is good in this area would there be any chance of saving this section and selling it to me..desperate times.
Thanks,Dave.

dang...you guys are just too helpful, over here its the total opposite.
Getting the whole cab over would be a chore in itself but that section would fit in a box once cut out.. ;D

ok, so just pay me the shipping when i get it cut out. i have to finish painting a van this week, and try to find the time and make sure i have the tools to cut out what you need. pretty sure i do but the weather's been crappy and it's outside. so i'll keep you posted. i have to move them the end of the week so i have to cut it, it's just finding the time this week to get to it. so i'll let you know once i get it cut. i want to take out the windshield and keep it for a spare, but idk how to take it out so i was looking for a dummy guide picture how to so i could follow it on taking the glass out.

Great..if you can get that out without any hassle to yourself i'd appreciate it,vile is also gonna look over a cab for me so whoever gets to it first i suppose, but having 2 sections could be good just in case.
Your windshield removal is pretty simple..
Pull the chrome insert..start by removing the trim cover at the lower center and pick out one end,the n just pull it around the gasket.
Once that is out,go inside the cab and pick a upper corner of the gasket and push it over the windshield frame,on my cab once that corner was over the frame the rest moved pretty quick, usually you get half the gasket over and the glass will slide out to the side from where you started...
Or if you dont need the gasket...just cut the glass out..2 mins.... ;D

Got my Energy Suspension Control arm bushes the other day so fitted one side back upto the frame, still waiting on the box of parts arriving so i can move along.
Found a real nice galvanising paint that gives a good look to all the hardware after its been blasted, not too bright and very matt.
Also the weather has perked up so if '2502' has come good on his metal removing skills as soon as he's sorted that i can get back into the cab work.... ;D

Yeah all welding finally done. Done all the filler work, doesn't look too bad. Bodyshop got it in primer and blocked off then gave me a ridiculous price to put top coat on- 4k !! In the process of finding somewhere to paint it, my garage isn't big ennuff and a mate's gonna do it for me!

The tear down on your truck looks awesome, it's all time, money and the love of a good woman  ;)

Finally got round to working on the firewall over last week and made a couple of subtle changes (anyone spot them) just to clean it up a touch, anyone use UPOL -REFACE...my best friend at the moment..lol.
As you can see by the pics the truck used to have ac but the previous owner tore it out,i was gonna weld the old hose holes up but the fan case hides them well,2 grommets will seal them from rain etc.

I noticed it's been smoothed, aint there a flat lip that comes down diagonally on the pass side from top pass. side towards the ds at bottom of it. That's fone, middle is smoothed, I think there's a hole dimpled or punched in the center bump section, which is where the computer harness comes thru on new trucks it's gone, and was they a ridge on the ds as well as the one I mentioned on the ps? also the area around the column didn't it stick out more or have a lip around it? if so it's gone too.

BTW I think the whole things looks great and great work, wished I had a 73-80 to do the same, ground up build.

Post by: overthepond on July 18, 2010, 06:33:33 am
well spotted.. ;D
I was gonna smooth the whole area but the time it takes would set it back a month or so,easier to just make it look clean removing those two seams and the lip around the master cylinder area and a couple of the panel overlaps.

Great progress! I would love to own a "round headlight" year. My father had a 79' c10 back in the day and have always been fond of them. Great job!

LOl I had one too to paint the 84 c10 under it actually held up thru alot around here, high winds and heavy rain, but I had 4 foot roof bolts they use in the mines drove into the ground at opposing angles on each side and then had the center of the wall where  it attached to the roof tied to the truck or car with ratchet straps to the frame, and the end ratchet strapped to my fence. it would lift and wobble and move all the time sometimes pops a leg off, but one day it came completely undone. The poll scratched my truck bad, put some dents in it and busted the ds ventvisor, took out some paint around the headlight on my monte carlo and took out the wifes back glass, costs us $300 for a new back window. All the joiners up top bent or ripped apart, and now it's laying in the building.
