i have a 1980 cc dually 454 with the 3speed auto tranny
i want to installl a trans gauge in to it i cant seem to find out any info on installing
any help would be great
thanks

What do you mean transmission gauge?
-
a tranny temp gauge
-
Just mount the temp sensor in the pan. If you don't have a pan with a drain plug either install one or buy a different pan.
-
I got one from B&M and It's all electrical. It's got a sensor that you rig a TEE up to the lower (return??) line up to, then you need a power and a ground.
-
do you have any photos of it installed?
-
i was looking at my transmission and on the driver side it look like there is a sensor with one wire going to it what is that for ?
is this what you installed?

Th400? That's the detent solenoid
-
what does that do?
can i replace that with a temp sensor
on the other side there is two tranmission lines going to the cooler and there is another metal line going to it almost look like a oil pressure gauge can you tell me what that is?
thanks

No pics as of now... my trucks at the shop. But that is the gauge that installed. I have a 700R4 in my truck so I dunno what your third line is.
-
We'll need a pic of your other mystery line unless it's the vacuum line to the modulator.
-
it is a 400 and i bet its a vacuum line
is there a "cap" or something like that i can take out and install a sensor?
-
Get one of these and thread the sensor into it.

ive been reading about the differnts in placement of the tranny temp sender and the installation i think im leaning more toward the one from summit it look like an easy install and something i can do with out haveing to drain the tranny fluid out (which i prob need to do anyways and change the filter) here are some other thread ive been reading (sorry there are from diff site but very useful infor

Wow! good thing I got an auxiliary cooler. I was running about 290. That gauge was very easy to install for me, but I've done gauges in the past many times before.
Vile, are you talking about a mechanical gauge to thread into the pan? I'm not sure if the B&M will work but I could be wrong. Viles idea sounds alot simpler than my gauge install, let us know what you decide on doing.
-
so you did install your on the lower return line? and it was 290 before you installed the aftermarket cooler
-
Yeah. My trucks at the trans shop for crappy rebuilding. Guy threw in a trans cooler b/c I been there often. He told me the rad can't keep up with a 700R4, so a trans cooler was in order. My trans is built pretty radically too.
-
i decided to go ahead and buy the B&M tranny temp gauge
i should be putting it in this weekend im still not sure where to put it yet, after reading several pages about this topic even in other forums i have yet to decide where to put my there is alot of good point where to put and y so well see this weekend when i have a free min to put it in
-
I put autometer gauges in my stock locations, and I had the brake warning lamp that I popped out and put the B&M gauge in that spot
-
i installed my gauge and etc yesterday morning it was really simple to install i put my gauge where the clock use to be (the previous owner took it out and put a oil gauge there i got the stock gauge to work) i also put the sending unit in the lower return line after driving it into town the gauge reads 150-160 i havent took in out on a long trip yet going in to town is about 10miles and when i get there i park it for a an hr. On the installation sheet it said a transmission should run 175-225
-
My trans seemed to take a decade to heat up lol. But after it did, it seemed to take even longer to cool after the truck had been shut off. Take it through its paces, and definitely take on the highway.

for DD i like my temps 130-160* towing little warmer... i dont like anything over 200 for sustained periods or i look at getting a bigger cooler
IMO i rather have the temp in the outlet line..(too cooler) much like an engine temp guage is set right before the t-stat..
