Ok, so I have a horrible paintjob on my 1981 Custom Deluxe stepside. It was sprayed black over the original silver. The problem is the black is all coming off in big chunks. It seems that the silver underneath is shiny as if they painted right over everything without any preparation.
How can I remove the black paint without wiping out too much of the silver underneath? I want to strip off all the black paint so I can give it a proper respray without starting from scratch with bare metal. Thanks.

DA sander is your best friend.

A good quality razor scraper and change the blade often will take allot of it off. Long slow even passes.

Take a roll of 2 inch tape, take a piece, put it on the panel and take your hand and rub it down good and pull the tape off and i bet alot will come off that piece you rubbed down...
thanks

Hmm...very interesting. I guess I gotta buy a like 15 rolls of tape, right? Duct tape? ::)

you could get what they call a sleeve from home depot for like 20 bucks..There are like 6 rolls in a sleeve.I would buy 1 roll 1st n try that method. If not then blazin`s method is good as well...
thanks

High pressure washer?

Honestly, I don't know how well it's really on there. It's all flaking off at the edges of the panels. Looks like shoot. That high pressure wash idea sounds cooler than the tape idea! I'll give it a shot when I get back from Iraq in January sometime. Thanks!

Since you're over there in Iraq, THANK YOU! And Happy Thanksgiving!
