We finally got a new camera and here is a picture of it. It was originally a diesel powered truck, but someone (previous owner) yanked the diesel and put in a 383. engine runs and sounds great, but Tranny is slipping bad..
-
Here are two more images...
-
Looks pretty straight. Why the Budweiser racing sticker?
-
Sticker was on it when we bought it ($2000.00, by the way) Crystal prefers MGD, me, toss up between Lost Coast Great White pale ale or Eel River California Blonde! Body is really straight, some cancer on passenger side fender.
Since this was (is? registered as) a diesel, the brake and power steering systems are different than a gas powered, right? I mean there is no brake booster behind the Master cylinder. Would anyone recommend a swap and is it fairly straight forward to do?
-
There's a brake booster, it's just not vacuum operated. It should have a hydro-boost system. If it works, leave it alone.
-
Yep, when it's operating correctly hydroboost is excellent. I actually converted my truck from vacuum booster to hydroboost, and it's the only modification I've done that I'm 100% satisfied with. Keep your PS fluid clean and keep that hydroboost. ;)
-
Got it, Hydro-boost stays...Sure alot of leaks in the power steering system, and the steering is as sloppy as I've ever felt on any vehicle...So, I guess we'll start with a tranny and rebuilding the steering system!
-
looks good however i think i would do somethin 'bout that it exhaust...looks pretty funny comin out the back like that haha.
-
That exhaust is definitely gonna be addressed!
-
yeah the power steering in my truck and my grandfathers 86 GMC K20 both seen soft so i dont know if this is just a charactist of these trucks, or if theyre just old? when my buyys drives my truck from his 85 ford he comments on how soft is is also. idk?
-
Sweet. :)
I love the short bed 4x4s.

Been a while since I posted in here...This week we took Crystal's Truck up to a buddy's house to get the paint redone. (Nice when taxes come back :D) We got the boogers sanded out, sealed it, and primed it yesterday. The primer showed us a few dings to touch up. Hopefully, if it's not raining today, we'll get those dings and rock chips addressed, and be ready for body color. Would've took some pics, but crystal took the camera with her to Sacramento yesterday. Will be posting pics soon if any are interested. I still haven't taken those goofy exhaust tips off yet, my buddy cussed me hard yesterday when he got his knee with one of them as he was spraying on the sealer!

We like pics. pics are good. real good.

That is a major vice in the early hydro boost systems, I agree with Vile, if it works leave it, but once it start messing up, junk it. I've never had good luck with hydro boost set ups

My truck has a stock hydro boost set -up, even though it came with a gas motor, and It seems to have a little issue.. when at stop lights in gear, just holding her there for a minute or so.. it creeps forward and pulls through, requiring slightly more pressure to stay still.....
-
not much, just a little more pressure. then a little more.. the pedal doesn't seem to keep going to the floor, so ? almost like the idle is too high, but its set good (if not a little low)
?? any thoughts guys?

Today the sun peeked out for a few hours and we got the truck all block sanded and marked all the rock chips and dings for filling on the next sunny day...another day or two and we're gonna spray it a single stage 2010 High Performance White...coming along fine and sure is alot of fun working on it!

and a few more...

Today we glazed in the rock chips, block sanded some more and filled in low spots...one more day of primer and sanding and then it's off to the paint booth! I also scored a 700r4 from an '83 Blazer that had been rebuilt less than 30000 miles ago for $350.00 from John's Auto Wreckers in Eureka. Gonnna pick that up Friday, clean and paint it, and install it after the truck is painted! Man, really starting to get into it after 2 years of vacillating! This is fun! ;D
-
Painted the bumper brackets today. We painted the truck on 04/07/09. Sure came out nice! We still have a little wet sanding, panel adjusting, and cowl and tailgate still need to be shot. Chris, the tech article on removing the cowl for cleaning sure came in handy!
The tranny at John's was junk...about a 1/4inch of metal in bottom of pan. We can get a rebuilt one in Santa Rosa or Sacramento for about $700, so we'll wait on that. As soon as we get the paint buffed and waxed, I'll post some pics of the truck on here. Until then, here are the brackets after some scuffing and painting. In case someone is curious what kind of paint I used for the brackets, it is Dominion Sure Seal Trim Black, code 24007, stock STW2.

It's raining today, so we took some of the chrome pieces inside, washed them in the bathtub, scrubbed them with an S.O.S. pad, and then polished them with Mother's chrome polish.
What we've got done so far:
-
We actually painted the truck on 04/07/10...Still getting the date wrong after 4 months! :D
-
lookin good
-
Thanks! Here is the rest of the trim pieces after cleaning and polishing. Still need to get new drip rails, cab trim and fender trim, but these sure cleaned up good yesterday!
-
Here it is after a little wet sanding and buffing.

A few more...

Just painted the radiator support black... All of the original chrome and emblems are going back on. Crystal wants it close to stock with a few accessories. (The brush guard, tubular grill, chrome roll bar and kc lites..) She's always had this dream of making her truck look like Colt Seaver's from the Fall Guy. Just a little shinier! 'Course her's is a short bed...I think Colt's was a long bed. When we redo the interior, I'm gonna dress it up with the billet parts...
Thanks for the compliments, guys! We're going up to put on the grill, lights, and new weatherstripping, and bring it home tonight or tomorrow morning. I'll post some more pics later...
-
Long day today! We're tired and sunburned! But this is what we got done today...
-
And a few more...
-
Looks good. Want to paint mine next? ;D
-
I didn't paint Crystal's truck...a friend of mine did, but since you're close by, we could get together and chew the fat sometime! :D
-
Brought it home yesterday...Here's a few pics...
-
Very nice truck... I love it... we have the same one, but lowered. :)
-
Got Crystal's truck back together today! Thanks for your help Haulin It (Lorne). Now I'm on the hunt for a rebuilt 700R4, need to do some front end work, redo the interior, and some electrical, but it sure does look nice! Vile, we have the same seats in Crystal's truck as you do in your Blue K20 Longbed, (they're grey in yours)...do you know where to get the console top with the cupholders like yours? Crystal's are wood grain over particle board, and they're falling apart. She also needs a new seat tilt handle, her driver's side is stripped.
Here's a few pics...

That sure is an awesome looking truck.
I would love to build truck like that for my ol' lady.
Somethings I would consider for her truck.......
It would be a 81~87 shorty 4x4.
She likes red, so I guess red it would be.. I would like to build her truck with the '91 Blazer grille, cab lights, and the stepside pick-up box.
Just for good measure I would drop in one of the D60/14-bolt 1-ton drivetrains in it that we have laying around so she couldn't tear anything up hauling groceries. Add the granny 4-speed, and NP-205 and we would have a winner.
-
Where did you get your chrome stoneguard for the hood?
-
It was on the truck when we bought it in '05...Don't know where to get them nowadays...used to be in JC Whitney (Sorry, Chris!) ::)
