Title: how do i find out what motor i got?
Post by: StuntManMike on December 01, 2009, 09:50:28 pm
OK so i bought a 87 k10 like a month and a half ago and it has a newer vortec 350 in it, but i dont know what year the motor is. Which will put me in a bind when i have to buy replacement parts for the motor. I heard you can find out the motor serial number on a flange where it meets with the tranny but i have not had any luck....any help would be awesome! thanks guys

Right above the oil filter it will have a date stamp in the casting but kinda hard to see while in the truck.

Maybe a mirror and flashlight will work. (if you can read inverted....or use 2 mirrors)

or use a digital camera and snap pics all around there---preferably on macro mode to get good detailed close-up shots to read the numbers.

Great Suggestion Sgt. That I how I have done it myself. Hard to get back there and see the #'s, so I stuck my cam back there and got pics, the downloaded on the computer, rotated them right side up and read the #'s just fine.

BTW, just to be correct, this will be a V model truck not a K. 1987 4x4 used V instead of K. Strange I know, and we all know what you are talking about. Just thought you might want to know that. It is handy to know if you are calling around a parts store since many of those guys are not the sharpest in their business.
