Being from/near DC, i can tell you with authority that the DC "inspection" was not serious----do you have wiper blades---they didn't check whether the wipers actually worked, they just visually if you had them on the car.   Things of that nature.

I think inspections are important but should be done where you choose to have them done. So if a consumer thinks you're just trying to sell them something they can pay a $25 fee, then move onto the next shop and pay them to repair it. It'll force people to keep safer cars on the road. Antiques should be exempt. The inspections should be limited to major safety items.

i wish they would introduce a bill in VA to do away with trailer inspections.  Every year i have to haul my camper to a shop that is big enough  to accomodate it and pay $20 so they can see that my brakes on the trailer work. 

I take my camper out about twice a year, but, i have to get it inspected every year.  I tent camp mostly now, but, i still take the camper to bluegrass festivals.

This is Hog Wash!  A big pain.

I had my 30 ft gooseneck trailer inspected right after I got it, then found out that all trailers 3500 lb up have to be inspected. What a pain. I have three that I use regularly, and have three others in need of repairs when the time comes. The biggest thing was the goob doing the inspection. He pulled the break away cable out  of the switch, and then got in the truck, put it in gear, and floored it. I see the tires on my brand new trailer being drug across the parking lot about 100 foot, he turns it around, still dragging the tires, comes back and tells me he cant pass it because the brakes arent holding. I pointed out the drag marks on the pavement from my brand new tires (not even 5 miles on them) and he said its supposed to hold the truck. We went round and round, and just when I was about to loe m temper, another guy came over and corrected his mistake. An empty trailer hooked up to an 01 crewcab dually with an 8.1 with the throttle floored? No way the trailer is going to hold it in place. I got my sticker but really wanted to make them by me new tires. I just went on my way. Then I found out I was going to pay for a DOT sticker which is $50. I know I dont need a DOT inspection to haul my farm tractor. Some of the inspections are rediculous, but I agree if it is a safety issue, it needs to be addressed.
