Title: 6.2L Detroit Turbo
Post by: C-Moore502 on December 14, 2009, 01:23:24 pm
I have a 84 K20 with the 6.2L and I have been thinking about putting a turbo on it to get some more power but I heard that the turbos are pretty hard on the old diesel and I wanted to check what everyone else thought. Is it a good idea to turbo the old 6.2L? Thanks for all the help, I would be lost with out you guys.

Banks Turbo'd them all the time.  You can't get ridiculous with the 6.2L, the are not like modern diesels pumping out 500hp though.
If you limited boost to around 5-7 you can pick up about 50hp or more and you gas mileage will increase.  That will put you around 200hp or so.

I have a banks kit for mine already, just haven't gotten to installing it.

I love Banks' products. I used to sell and install them at a truck store and all my customers were very happy. I even went down to his shop, met him, sat in the sidewinder and he took us to the local race track that evening. Smart guy.

GM used them starting in 1989 as dealer installed options.

What are the prices on the Banks Turbo for the 6.2?

Well IF you can still get them to produce you one (and they "might") I talked to an owner last year that got them to make one for him brand new 1.5 years ago and he paid $2800.

ALTHOUGH, you can pick one up on Ebay for less than a grand sometimes.

I don't know what it's worth, but they are still on their website.

Just found a 6.2 that has a 6.5 turbo set up on it on craigslist. Anyone have any info on this set up?

Not to hard to do, and cheaper than the used banks stuff. Need the turbo, upper and lower intake and pass. side manifold from the 6.5. I had a tight fit with the down pipe, so just went out the inner fender. The dieselplace has good info, as do some others.
