calling for 8"-12" here for Friday night and Saturday morning. WoooHooo!!! It's been a while since we got that much. It's even better because I don't have to work 'til Monday, giving my son and I some time to make snowmen. Long range, they are calling for more snow Xmas Eve!! Been many decades since I 've seen a white Xmas.

It's like 15° here.... I hate it
-
11 degrees here (about 80 miles due north of Vile) and I need it so that the backyard rink will freeze solid before it snows again. Weather-idiots in Boston are still on the fence saying maybe we won't get anything or we might get 18" on Sunday if the track is right. WTH? Can't pin it down any closer than that??? And you make how much? I need a job like that!
BTW SgtDel, we're at a 100% chance for a white Christmas - 6" of crusty, icy snow on the ground right now and the forecast calls for temps below 30 for the next 10 days.
Good to hear you've got a shot at a white holiday!
-
on the fence saying maybe we won't get anything or we might get 18" on Sunday if the track is right
An hour west of me in the Shenandoah Valley, they are calling for up to 18", and hour east of here near Williamsburg may get 3" of all rain. I hope this Low Pressure system moves about 50 miles more eastward and I'll have to tunnel out my back door.
-
My new truck has lockers front/rear. Bring it on.
-
Im in the shedadoha valley and we just heard that its possible to get 24in of snow!
-
Hey Sgt, Send some snow about 50 miles east of you! I want some too!!
-
they keep upping the total snow accumulations.....cool!!
new map from 10am this morning...that purple 12" + is right over my head. My generators are ready, my snow shovel is set aside, my gas cans are topped off.....Let It Snow!

It's a snowin' purdy good.
taken through the window from my 2nd floor at 830pm, three hours after the first snowflake fell. I'm glad I'm sleeping in tomorrow morn.

-
Sure looks cold. Glad you got snow.
-
watchin the forecast and we are supposed to get 8-15 inches. kind of broad, but i'll take any right now! love that white gold, maybe the sled will see some use this year!
-
The stars have finally lined up perfectly for a change. Now calling for 12" - 16" here, and up to 24" just 20 miles west. 3 feet in the Shenandoah valley....
I know you New Englanders think nothing of this, but, this is rare here in the Mid Atlantic states....
8 inches in 6 hrs so far...

Every one be safe saw something on the news this might be one of the top 5 storms in history not sure what they were talking about.
-
That WTH you for dreaming of White Christmas Sarge !!! Its no so bad. I do not mind the snow, but hate ice. Beleive it or not, if the wind is not blowing bad, snow weather is usually not real cold, but ice weather is. You would not think there is a differance, and maybe there isn't in other parts of the country, but usually in snowy weather in OK, its tolerable temp with a jacket and thick socks, as long as you are keeping dry. Icy weather on the other hand, is bone chilling cold, and why it actually make the ice instead of snow. It freezes rock hard so fast cuz of cold temp.
-
a white xmas would be nice. Our Thursday storm is now looking like rain, though.
I just saw lightning and heard thunder.....in a blizzard!
-
it's constantly thundering and lightning! For some reason the theme to the Twilight Zone is in my head.
-
Sgt I'm at work right now watching it fall hopefully i get relief in the morning, got my truck so i know i can get home as long as someone shows up, and its only my Monday get off wed :'(
-
The last snow we got I kept seeing a blue flash in the snow while I was shoveling. Every time I looked up, the sky looked clear so I thought I was goign crazy until I looked up and actually saw the lightning. Every 30-40 seconds snow lightning! It was definitely a sight
-
what?
-
what?
What are you what-ing? ???
-
still snowing at 830am. I hear some sleet hit the windows, but still mainly snow. I haven't gone out yet, but, what I can tell on the vehicles, we have about a foot. calling for more. Witht the 25mph winds, the snow is falling nearly horizontally.
-
By far the biggest snow storm in December in Central Va. In 1917 we got 10", in 1966 we got 8". In 2009, 15"+....where's Al Gore's Nobel Prize? If I could get a replica of it I'd take a pic with this foot plus of snow in the background.
The interstates around here are a parking lot. These www.trafficland.com camera shots are of I 81 in the valley where the 18-wheelers cannot make it over all those hills rolling through the shenandoah. Once their wheels start spinning, that's all she wrote. Parking lots....
they just shut down I-81, the main NY to AL corridor in the Valley, they shut down route 29, and they shut down I77, from West Va down to NC...Nat'l Guard and municpal public safety having to rescue stranded drivers.

NICE!!!! Thanks for the pics guys. We're going to be left out of this one for the most part. They're calling for 15-20" down in southeastern Mass (near Cape Cod), but decreasing greatly as you head north and west. We might get 6" unless the storm track shifts inland. Not sure, but I think Vile stands to get a foot or more. Not snowing yet, supposed to start sometime this evening or overnight.
-
That's what they're sayin smitty but not a snowflake yet. It sucks cuz I am sick and have flu like symptoms so I can't even enjoy it >:(
-
Yeah dennis is a pretty good friend of mine he works in my dept with me at work! I live in fort defiance/verona. I went out tonight and checked on mom and ended up having to help my buddy most of the day! He called me and said his wheel fell off his truck lol we gt it. Back on but is keeps working loose so he left it at my house and i took him home! I sure wish i couldlve had my silverado together for all this snow! :/
-
so what did just north of Staunton get in the valley? My guess, just under 30"?
I have a former girlfriend who lives in Verona, within sight of I-81, which was a parking lot yesterday.
I wish Dennis had better luck with the owner of his old truck...for the memories of his son. I helped him downsize some pics a couple of mons ago.
-
Well,
1) i had to commute late fri night/sat morning and it was beyond terrible, so you all can keep your happy snow. On the other hand, it was/is interesting to be all snowed in/cozy for the weekend; It was an interesting feeling. So maybe once in a great while it might be ok.
2) More importantly, when you're trying to get moving/get unstuck in the snow i "hear" that it's not a good idea to spin one wheel on an open diff. The snow we had was the type where if you spin the wheel, you move real slow at first and then eventually start to move normally. You couldn't really get "dug in." i admit i did this alot on fri night----it probably added up to several miles of spinning.
a) Is this not a good idea?
b) Should one instead carry a shovel and or use kitty litter and such?
-
i always carry a shovel and a bag of sand or 2 in the winter. if you get stuck, it's easy to dig snow out of the way, then throw some sand down for traction to get moving again. if you are in the deep stuff (not plowed road or wheelin) try to keep momentum, but as soon as your wheels start to spin, stop! you'll just dig in and get really stuck.
-
My mom lives in verona and im maybe 5miles north if that right before mt sydney and wyers cave.it was right about 30 inches of so i was out and about most of last night helping my stuck friends lol. Yeah i dont think dennis had any luck with the new owner of his 73 :/ i went over and helped him adjust his valves in his 77 a few months back and once i get mine back togeather and everything thaws he is gona help me put my solid back glass in :)
-
The local news in OK, is showing alot of the VA snow and talking about the records it breaking. Saying you guys are measuring it with Yard Sticks, not rulers. Us adults don't care for it much, but the kids gotta be loving it. You're not going to change it anyway, so may as well as enjoy it. You prbably won't see snow like that again at your place in your lifetime. Just stay safe and don't get yourself stuck out in it. Frostbite isn't any fun either and alot more serious than people seem to realize.
-

It did take a while to saturate the air enough for the snow to make it to the ground. Don't know how much you ended up with but it was a bust for me. A solid 1/2" of powder, took all of 20 minutes to clean up. Southeastern and south-central Mass got around 20" though. Amazing the difference 40 miles makes.
-
Amazing the difference 40 miles makes.
Yeah, it is amazing. 40 miles east of me near Colonial Williamsburg only got an inch or two with some sleet, mostly rain. 40 miles west of me near Charlottesville got nearly 2 feet and 90 miles west of me in the valley near Screamin86, got 30"
15 miles from me where my parents are and where i grew up, in western Hanover Co, got 20" ---sure beats my 12".
-
Yeah my grandma lives in smithfield va and she said they maybe got an inch friday and an inch sunday and a bunch of rain! She said she has a lake in her back yard lol. If they would have gotten any amout of snow though they wouldnt know how to act
-
screw the snow, lol cost me money had to call out of work yesterday due to getting stuck in my
4x4 i mean 4x2 since the from hub was broke well went to a friends house yesterday found one put it on. went to my moms and shoveled her driveway took my friend home got gas turned around cause on the way home i Saw someone stuck but by time i got back they were gone. so i went home and saw someone else just sitting in the middle of the road so i ask if they need help it was an older couple about 40 ;D. told them i will pull off and give them a hand pulled off and saw they got out of the ice. so i went to take off a slid down a ditch so i called a buddy he cam out and started driving all most got out and snap broke the front divers side axle shaft same dang side shaft i broke this summer, see kids this is what i get for bing nice ::)
-
an older couple about 40
No, that's not what you get for being nice...that's what you get for thinking 40 is old!! ;D
-
lol ::) should of known better
-
I had an old guy tell me once, A good deed never goes unpunished. I told he he was wrong. Just live life and you soon find out it really is true. Doesn't stop me though. I have stopped many times to help old people or ladies change flats. They want to pay me for it, and I decline to take it. I just hope someone is around if my mother, daughter, or grandparents need help.
